The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is a leader in historic preservation and manages several historic sites, museums, and programs that interpret Prince George's County's rich history. The Natural and Historical Resources Division (NHRD), oversees 22 historic sites that are open to the public, including Marietta House Museum. 

Marietta House Museum is a nationally recognized historic site that includes a restored Federal-style brick plantation house and outbuildings set on 25-acres in Glenn Dale, Maryland. Marietta House Museum is dedicated to exploring, elevating, and transforming awareness of the interconnected relationships of the people and their descendants who lived and labored at Marietta, free and enslaved. As a public history steward, Marietta is committed to co-curating discussions, exhibitions, and programs with broad community input to promote universal social equity. In addition, Marietta interprets the historical architecture and landscape across Prince George’s County, Maryland, through inclusive United States American history.

The successful candidate will have knowledge in African American history and Maryland history or show the willingness to learn these subsets of American history. The candidate can demonstrate their knowledge and experience, historic house facility management, public programming, POS and petty cash management, museum marketing, and supervision. The candidate’s work expectation is 80% at Marietta and 20% at the division office for divisional initiatives. One weekend day a month is expected in this position.

The History Specialist II/Operations Manager collaborates with the Museum Director in leading the museum to be an impactful community history organization. The Manager assists the director in implementing public programs to support the division’s Impact Planning Framework and Inclusive Interpretation plans. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate the strategic pillars in their professional work:

  • Serves as assistant director at Marietta House Museum when the Museum Director is on leave or is not on-site and not immediately available.

  • Manages day-to-day operations of the facility.

  • Collaborates with the Museum Director to develop and implement the historic site’s interpretive plan, inclusive interpretation, annual strategic plan, annual plan, and monthly reports.

  • Works with the Museum Director to develop and implement the museum’s annual Giving Voice Initiative event, Annual Wine and Jazz event, Annual Winter Holiday Open House.

  • Collaborates with the Museum Director to develop and manage work plans to supervise seasonal staff for tours, rentals, library, field trips, and public programs. 

  • Plans, promotes, and works at public programs including monthly and annual events such as festivals, lectures, family programs, and workshops.

  • Oversees key digital marketing tools for Marietta House Museum including Marietta’s Facebook posts, press announcements, and media calendars, and contributes to the monthly Marietta Newsletter and oversees its circulation.  This position also oversees Parks Direct program data implementation.

  • Collects and evaluates museum’s daily visitation data including zip codes, visitor feedback survey results, community comments that will be used in monthly and annual reports, including Parks Direct reports.

  • Active leadership role in community engagement with the local community and division partners.

  • Supervises the manager of the outside Farmers Market, and works with the University of Maryland, and Prince George’s County Health Department to ensure the Farmer’s Market is complying with vendor and health rules. 

  • Manages Marietta’s Petty Cash Custodian for POS, petty cash purchases and reimbursements, trains staff on cash register, and manages Parks Direct bank deposits.

  • Collaborates with Museum Director on annual budgets and program budgets.

  • Supervises the Outreach Coordinator who handles vehicle care, site-security checks, lawn care, grounds, safety checks, and house cleaning.

  • Assists Museum Director in important initiatives including collections management, preservation of historic structures, descendant networks, research of the enslaved, exhibitions, interpretation, and community engagement.

  • Assists Division office in in divisional events and initiatives. 

Highly desired candidates will possess:

  1. Extensive experience in African American history.
  2. Master’s degree in history or public history.
  3. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  4. Organized with the ability to manage multiple deadlines with attention to detail.
  5. Familiarity with Outlook, Microsoft office suite, Samaritan, and Parks Direct.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office setting or in community/county historic facilities that are adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated, or outdoors during weather not requiring special precautions; some driving to and from facilities and activities may be required. Work area involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions and may involve responding to emergency situations. Work requires some physical exertion such as periods of standing, or recurring crouching, bending, standing, stooping, stretching, or walking. Occasionally required to work on nights, weekends and extended hours.

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in History, Public History, American Studies, Museum Studies, Archaeology, Paleontology, Anthropology, Historic Preservation, Interpretive Research, Library Sciences or any related field.
  2. Two (2) years of professional or related experience in history work.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years.
  4. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's licenses must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of the position.
