We are actively seeking experienced, dynamic, highly motivated teamplayers to join us as Principal Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker-CDL with the Cabin John Maintenance Facility, located in Potomac, MD. The Southern Parks Division meets both local and regional leisure needs by providing opportunities for a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities in the most densely populated areas of Montgomery County. The division manages over 200 parks, including Urban, Local, and Regional Parks. Included in these parks are almost 200 employees and 100 pieces of equipment to accomplish the Department’s mission.
Under the general supervision of a Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader, the successful candidate will perform a variety of general parks maintenance tasks such as playground repairs, grass mowing, trash removal, athletic field renovation and maintenance, trail maintenance, tree planting, pruning, and aftercare cleaning, repairing park buildings and structures while working with and occasionally leading teams of career and /or seasonal employees.Theidealcandidateshouldpossessskillstooperatetrucks,tractors with attachments, large riding mowers, loaders, and forklifts (some of which may require a Commercial Driver’s License). Trade skills in carpentry and painting are a plus.

- Operation of mid-sized to large equipment, including large mowers, tractors with attachments, backhoes, loaders, etc.
- Operationoftrucks,truckandtrailercombinations,snowplows,dumptrucks,trash trucks, etc.
- Hauling heavy-duty tractors, skid steer, or other large equipment using a trailer and CDL vehicles.
- Occasional supervision of park maintenance employees performing general park maintenance tasks.
- Ability to perform minor repairs to playground equipment, carpentry custodial, and preventive maintenance tasks.
- Perform general maintenance to playgrounds, buildings, and grounds.
- Respondstoemergenciesandinclementweatherconditionssuchashurricanes, blizzards, and earthquakes.
- Athletic field maintenance includes operating tractor w/ attachment to rake, drag, and grade fields. Also sprays pesticides.
- Ability to work independently and be proficient in grounds maintenance as well as custodial services.
- Maintain inventories of supplies and materials.
- Performs stormwater facilities preventive maintenance according to the Department of Environment Protection standards.
- Maintain bio-retention and rain garden facilities with balanced vegetation and free of weeds.
Working Conditions:
- Primarily works outside but may work inside on occasion or as assigned.
- May work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Occasionally exposed to inclement weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g., bees, hornets, wasps) and plants (e.g., poison ivy).
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proven ability to read and understand materials and instructions and write routine records and reports.
- Exposure to various elements and weather conditions, waste, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects(e.g. :bees, hornets, wasps, etc.).
- The ability to constantly kneel, bend, twist, lift, and carry heavy objects of up to 100 pounds.
- The ability to worknights, weekends, days ,and /or any combination thereof.
- An essential employee on-call 24 hours for any emergencies.
ADDITIONALINFORMATION:
Incumbent maybe required to possess a CDL and/or PACorhavetheabilitytoattainonewithin12 months of employment.

- High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
- Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years.
- Valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.
- Pass Commission medical examination.
- Depending upon the area of assignment, some positions in this class require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including:
- Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Applicator certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment;
- Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Fertilizer Applicator certification; and
- National Playground Safety Institute certification.
