Position Summary
The Maryland School for the Blind (MSB) seeks an experienced and creative Web Designer to lead the redesign of its organizational website. This project-based role focuses on creating a modern, user-friendly, and accessible website that reflects MSB's mission and supports its diverse community. The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise, innovative design skills, and a commitment to web accessibility to deliver a transformative digital experience.
Key Responsibilities
Website Redesign
- Develop and execute a comprehensive plan to redesign the MSB website, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and branding.
- Design a visually appealing, intuitive, and responsive website layout for desktop and mobile platforms.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define project objectives, user requirements, and desired outcomes.
- Create wireframes, prototypes, and design mockups for approval before implementation.
- Ensure the website adheres to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1 AA) to support users with disabilities.
- Conduct usability testing to refine the design for optimal functionality and ease of use.
- Integrate features that enhance accessibility, including screen reader compatibility, keyboard navigation, and high-contrast design options.
- Work with the Development and Marketing teams to integrate updated content, including text, images, videos, and interactive features.
- Recommend best practices for organizing and presenting content to improve engagement and usability.
- Oversee the migration of content from the existing website to the redesigned platform.
- Ensure the new website is optimized for performance, speed, and search engine visibility.
- Implement tracking tools (e.g., Google Analytics) to measure site performance and user engagement.
- Regularly update the Director of Development and project stakeholders on progress, challenges, and milestones.
- Provide guidance on maintaining the website post-launch, including documentation and staff training.
- Bachelor's degree in Web Design, Digital Media, or a related field preferred.
- Proven experience in website redesign projects, with a portfolio showcasing successful work.
- Demonstrated expertise in designing accessible websites compliant with WCAG standards.
- Proficiency in design tools (Adobe XD, Figma, or similar) and web development languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
- Experience with content management systems (e.g., WordPress, Drupal).
- Knowledge of SEO best practices and performance optimization techniques.
- Familiarity with accessibility tools and technologies (e.g., screen readers, keyboard navigation testing).
- Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and accessibility best practices.
- Excellent project management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines and manage priorities.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with diverse stakeholders.
