Director of Development Position Summary:
The Director of Development is responsible for overseeing, planning, directing, and organizing all fundraising activities for The Mayflower at Winter Park. This position reports to The Mayflower's President / CEO and provides leadership for the implementation of a sustainable philanthropy program and strategic fund development initiatives to include, primarily: a major and planned giving program; an annual giving program, donor stewardship and recognition programs, and events and public relations related to development.
Director of Development Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain a portfolio of prospective donors capable of making major and planned gifts.
- Use a moves management model to strategically identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospective donors to secure major and planned gifts.
- Develop and execute balanced gifting plans that serve prospective donors.
- Ensure the availability and promotion of appropriate outright and planned giving vehicles.
- Appropriately engage the President / CEO, non-development staff members, board members, and other volunteers, as appropriate, in prospect identification, the development of relationship management strategies, the solicitation process, and donor stewardship.
- Prepare strategic plan with short- and long-range goals to meet funding objectives, enlisting support from the President / CEO, senior team members, and volunteer groups, as appropriate.
- Further refine The Mayflower's existing multi-year fundraising plan.
- Manage all aspects of volunteer activities associated with development including: volunteer identification, recruitment and training, scheduled meetings, oversight and execution of volunteer-driven activities.
- Prepare and submit an annual development budget.
- Prepare and write the development annual report on fundraising activities and progress.
- Oversee the timely and accurate recording of pertinent information in the development software program.
- Supervise appropriate administrative support.
- Attend regularly scheduled Department Head meetings and other scheduled meetings. Participate in training and other educational offerings.
- Strategically grow the prospective donor base for donors at all levels of giving capability.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute annual campaigns.
- Build and oversee donor recognition and stewardship programs.
- Partner with Marketing & Brand Engagement team to brand and promote philanthropy on campus.
- Respond to all inquiries resulting from marketing efforts and create proactive strategies for follow-up.
- Develop and conduct outreach within the surrounding community creating opportunities to cultivate relationships with local businesses, civic and social groups, estate and financial planning professionals, and other professionals with an interest in The Mayflower's values and mission.
Expectations / Must Haves:
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of all areas of fundraising, including annual giving, major, and planned giving is required
- Proven track record of successful major and planned gift fundraising is required
- Annual fund experience is preferred
- Knowledge and competence in Microsoft Office products and fundraising database software is required
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member is required
- Discretion when dealing with highly sensitive information, and a focus on customer service is required
- Motivation to set and achieve measurable goals is required
- Experience working with volunteers is desired
- A strong interest or background in senior services, social services, or health care desired
- A willingness to travel in order to build support for and funding of The Mayflower is required

- Must be able to lead by example, with first-hand knowledge of area of expertise
- Must display strong, friendly follow-up on tasks delegated to ensure proper results
Qualifications:
The position of Director of Development is not an 8 – 5, Monday – Friday desk job; therefore, qualified candidates must be able to work full-time hours that are flexible and will include some nights and weekends. As the preparation and implementation of events may take place outdoors, candidates must also be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions, stand for extended periods of time, and may be required to repetitively lift and move up to 25 lbs.
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, marketing, business administration, finance, or other related field is preferred
- A minimum of four (4) years’ fundraising experience is preferred
- Prefer two (2) years’ experience supervising and managing employees and volunteers
- Flexibility in work schedule as evidenced by working holidays, evenings, weekends and additional shifts when necessary to ensure adequate coverage within the department
- Able to operate a personal computer and be proficient in MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint etc.)
- Must pass a criminal background check before beginning work
Education:
- Bachelor's (Preferred)
Experience:
- Fundraising: 4 years (Preferred)
- Supervising and Managing Employees: 2 years (Preferred)
License/Certification:
- Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) (Preferred)
