  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five or more years of experience in higher education leading student support/student success programs and initiatives;
  • Direct work with first-generation college students in a college setting or experience with first-generation students in a college and/or related, educational setting;
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills;
  • Experience presenting at local, regional and national meetings and conferences;
  • Experience supervising a full-time employee; conducting annual performance evaluation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree
  • Seven or more years management experience, including hiring, training, and supervising a faculty and/or staff
  • Advanced knowledge of theories, including student development, learning, and identity development, and experience applying those frameworks professionally
  • Adept at problem-solving with experience supporting/advising students in personal and/or academic crisis
  • Familiarity with data analysis and assessment in student success

Job Description

Reporting to the Director for Peer Mentoring & First Gen Student Success, the Student Development Specialist III (SDS III) will be responsible for leading the day to day operations of our first-gen initiatives, including implementing and providing academic workshops for upper level first-gen students to foster college persistence, retention, and degree completion at Texas State University, organizing a first-gen annual curriculum, and serving as a co-representative to the National Center for First-Generation Student Success. The SDS III will assist with partner with community-based organizations to provide intentional support for first-gen students to increase college retention and completion. The SDS III will also assist with all retention and registration efforts of first-gen students including coordination of a case management model. This position will assist with assessment in academic engagement initiatives.

Job Duties

Purpose: Reporting to the Director for Peer Mentoring & First Gen Student Success, the Student Development Specialist III (SDS III) will be responsible for leading the day to day operations of our first-gen initiatives, including implementing and providing academic workshops for upper level first-gen students to foster college persistence, retention, and degree completion.

Job Duties:

  • Hire, training and supervise SDS II
  • Provide leadership and expertise to faculty and staff
  • Assist with First Gen Proud initiatives and retention efforts
  • Implement and lead academic workshops for upper level first gen students to foster college persistence, retention and degree completion
  • Coordinate scholars programs, including mentorship initiatives, leadership development, and networking opportunities.
  • Work with community-based organizations to provide international support for first gen students
  • Organize signature events such as First-Generation Student Celebrations, orientation sessions, and recognition ceremonies.
  • Prepare reports and presentations on program impact and student success metrics.
  • Maintain communication through newsletters, social media, and other platforms to keep students engaged and informed.
  • Present at local, regional, and national meetings and conferences on the results of University College programs and services;
  • Other duties assigned.
