Finance Coordinator/Bookkeeper

The Finance Coordinator is responsible for all bookkeeping and accounting activities for The Mediation Center, including all financial reporting. The Financial Coordinator provides regular reports to the Executive Director and Board of Directors in order for accurate assessments of the fiscal health of the organization to be made.
Agency Description
The Mediation Center is a 501(3)c nonprofit founded in 1984. We provide mediation, conflict resolution skills training, and supervised child visitation in Buncombe, Henderson, Transylvania, and Polk Counties of Western North Carolina. We believe that conflict is a normal part of life, and that people know what’s best in their own lives. Primary Areas of Responsibility
Maintain all routine bookkeeping for The Mediation Center
- Ensure payroll, payroll taxes, quarterly reports, W-2s, and all other related documents to ensure that changes in employment status (new hires, terminations, salary changes, etc.) are properly and timely executed
- Conduct monthly bank reconciliation for all accounts
- Compile and prepare grant- and contract-related financial reports including submitting detailed monthly reimbursement requests to several funders
- Handle all aspects of cash receipts, disbursements, and monthly reimbursement requests
- Accurately allocate expenses across programs and organizational functions
- Prepare accurate and complete financial statements, including monthly reports for the Finance Committee and Board of Directors each month in a timely fashion
Complete all necessary financial reports and filings
- Assist in the creation of annual budgets for the Center’s organization and programs
- Enter budgets into accounting software
- Coordinate the annual audit: preparing materials, submitting documents, and assisting throughout the audit process
Provide accurate numbers to support fiscal oversight and planning efforts
- Analyze financial data including reports and projections, to inform organization planning
- Consult with Executive Director to monitor expenses throughout the year

Supervisory Relationships
The Finance Coordinator reports to The Mediation Center’s Executive Director.
Hours/Schedule
This is a part-time (10 to 15 hours/week) non-exempt position, generally two days per week. The days can be flexible, but should be consistent week-to-week.
Location and Travel
The primary location for this position is our Buncombe County office in downtown Asheville. Occasional travel to Transylvania and Henderson Counties may be required. Work-related mileage (but not commute distance to Asheville) is reimbursed.
Requirements
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Accounting System
- Proficiency in Office Suite; ability to quickly master Office 365, databases, and several cloud-based software systems; ability to do basic trouble-shooting to resolve technology issues and questions
- Experience as a full-charge bookkeeper
- Knowledge of business, budget, financial processes and practices, and financial guidelines and terminology
- Ability to analyze and interpret reports, documents, and statistical data
- Ability to speak, understand, write, and read English at a professional level
- Ability to see and hear
- Ability to follow written and oral directions
- An acceptable outcome on a criminal background check (The Mediation Center supports employment opportunities for people with prior justice system involvement and will consider each case individually.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect highly sensitive information
Desired Characteristics

This position is 10 to 14 hours per week. This must include at least one full day, or two half days, that are consistent each week. Other hours are flexible. After the first 90 days, it may be possible to work up to 30% of hours remotely.

Pay: $24.00 - $29.00 per hour
