Operations Director

Location: On-Site / Lawrence Store (Home location)

Essential Functions
Leadership
- Build capacity of operational team through effective expectations, delegation, coaching, accountability and mentoring
- Work with leaders to develop knowledgeable, informed and engaged staff
- Ensure adequate coverage at all locations, departments & sub-departments
- Collaborate with the Finance Director to set quarterly budgets for sales, margin, department/store labor, supplies, tools, repairs and maintenance.
- Responsible for department and store financial results including sales, margin, production planning, inventory and labor
- Monitor deviations from the budget and strategize with Co op Support and direct reports to celebrate successes and remedy underperformance
- Adhere to the Supervisor Code of Conduct and serve as a leader in upholding those commitments
- Support a diverse and inclusive workplace culture by collaborating with HR to ensure all managers are adequately trained and uphold the co-op’s expectations. Hold managers and employees accountable in a way that addresses harm and supports continuous growth.
- Actively participate in required and relevant training, initiatives and meetings
- Responsible for security of customers, staff, facility and inventory
- Maintain awareness and engagement with National Co op Grocers (NCG) programs, staff and peers
- Travel for KCK store operations, required training, meetings and conferences as directed by General Manager
- Serve as a point person during disruptive situations and emergencies (on and off hours) and work with direct reports and key staff to handle situations as they arise
Shopping experience and customer relations
- Work collaboratively with Co op Support on promotions, category management and pricing. Take responsibility for execution of agreed upon plans.
- Responsible for store facilities including pest control, equipment maintenance and replacement
- Achieve consistent results for store conditioning (clean, orderly, on brand)
- Respond to customer feedback in person and through established digital systems
- Maintain high level of product knowledge throughout the store
- Strive for 100% compliance with health and safety regulations
- Coordinate with government inspectors and follow up accordingly
- Act as a first response to mechanical failure of store equipment
Accountability and positive employee relations
- Hire, train, coach and evaluate direct reports
- Demonstrate appreciation to employees for specific contributions and achievements
- Actively coach staff on policy and procedure, using appropriate documentation to uphold the co-op’s expectations
- Ensure employees receive effective training
Essential Skills and Experience
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, and is effective in all communication with individuals and groups.
- Intermediate skill with Microsoft Office Suite and digital communication
- Flexibility of schedule to adapt and respond to the needs of the team
- Proven ability to follow through on commitments, prioritize and reprioritize multiple initiatives and tasks as necessary
- At least three years supervising in a retail environment
- Ability to craft and edit Standard Operating Procedures related to retail operations and exceptional customer service skills in an accessible way
- Ability to provide and follow verbal and written instructions precisely and in a timely fashion
- Intermediate skill interpreting and analyzing financial data and budgets
- Ability to provide effective leadership for a group especially in facilitating effective group process for planning and implementing team plans and strategies.
- Ability to serve as the co-op’s point of contact - always supporting a positive public image.
Non-essential Skills and Experience:
- Industrial or commercial receiving and inventory control
- Previous experience with crowd control and safety in emergency situations
- Previous background and/or familiarity with natural foods
