About AmeriCorps
AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers serve directly with nonprofit organizations to tackle our nation’s most pressing challenges. Hosted by NeighborScapes NFP, AmeriCorps members will compose a "Harvey Conservation Corps" who will help catalyze environmental justice in and around the southern Chicago suburb of Harvey, Illinois.
Summary
The AmeriCorps members will take responsibility for supporting community gardens, urban farms and healthy green streetscapes; creating and maintaining trails in nearby parks and forest preserves, helping residents with both environmental stewardship and health education around nature, connecting Harvey students with nature; and maintaining and improving public lands.
Essential Duties
1. Greening vacant lots and caring for street trees
2. Designing informal green spaces
a. Creating /maintaining nature trails in public lands around the South Suburbs
3. Working in urban farms and community gardens
Qualifications
1. Must be a U.S. Citizen (required for FEMA Corps and Forest Corps), or a Lawful Permanent Resident of the U.S.
2. Must pass an initial drug screening test upon arrival to the program. A positive test on a drug screen for any substance (including marijuana) at any time during service could result in dismissal from the program.
3. Must be available for at least 4 months of service (term ends on August 2025), consisting of extensive
local/regional travel and additional service events around the State of Illinois.
