SUMMARY: Operates straight or articulated tractor type vehicles equipped with front mounted hydraulically powered bucket or scoop (loaders); operates tractors equipped with concave blade attached across front (dozers); operates articulated dump trucks, compactors, and additional heavy equipment and machinery as required to move, mix, lift, and transport bulk materials in the MCUA Landfill Facility;inspects, maintains, and repairs machinery and equipment by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Include the following and others as assigned.

Starts engine, shifts gears, presses pedals, and turns steering wheel, controls tool bars, carriers and disks to maneuver and operate loader, dozer, and other material-moving/conveying equipment and machinery.

Moves levers to lower and tilt bucket and drives front end loader forward to force bucket into bulk material and, when filled, raises and tilts bucket, drives vehicle to work site and dumps material.

Fastens attachments, connects hydraulic hoses, belts, mechanical linkage, or power takeoff shaft to provide power to raise, lower, or tilt dozer attachments.

Moves levers and depresses pedals to maneuver dozer tractor and raise, lower, and tilt attachments; drives dozer to move and mix bulk material.

Performs daily checks and routine maintenance and preventive maintenance on equipment such as lubricating, fueling, and cleaning; informs supervisor of observed equipment maintenance problems; greases, oils, and performs minor repairs as directed.

Performs daily housekeeping and custodial duties required to keep equipment and facilities safe and clean including machine operator's compartment; and performs site litter patrol and handpicking of materials and debris from the waste stream as directed.

Maintains cleanliness of equipment by washing down equipment, machinery, and site facilities as required.

Controls storm water drainage on the landfill by setting up and maintaining pumps at the workface and worksite.

Prepares and maintains accurate entries on cover material tally sheets, inspection and maintenance logs, and related landfill forms.

Repairs and maintains leachate collection systems.

Oversees the placement of soft waste in new landfill cells by removing sharp and bulky items in the waste that would otherwise damage the liner system.

Applies cover and approved alternate cover materials and bulk materials at the workface and worksite as directed.

Performs additional assigned duties as directed in a manner consistent with applicable safety and operating practices.

Complies with applicable safety and health policies and procedures and performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED); two (2) years experience operating heavy equipment or machinery; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to understand and carry out written or oral instructions. Ability to acquire a working knowledge of solid waste and/or sanitary landfill operations and regulations. Ability to maneuver and operate one or more types of gasoline or diesel powered heavy equipment on uneven hard and soft terrains. Knowledge of blade positioning to fine grade surfaces, inclines, slopes, and curves on all types of terrain. Ability to grade slopes and surfaces to fine specification by adjusting attachments while the vehicle is in motion on all types of terrain. Knowledge of adjusting, oiling, and maintaining equipment in a safe operating condition. Ability to recognize load and directional limitations of heavy equipment in all types of weather conditions.

LICENSES: Must possess valid New Jersey or state of residence Driver’s License and meet Authority insurance requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms; The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell; talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 or more pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able and willing to utilize appropriate respiratory or other safety equipment/PPE required in the performance of duties.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, noxious odors or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The employee frequently works in outside weather conditions (heat, snow, winds, rain, etc.), and on uneven surfaces and terrain. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Pay: $36,390.00 - $93,940.00 per year
