What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Teaching Assistant position at The Miriam P. Brenner Children's Museum?
For 26 years, the Miriam P. Brenner Children's Museum has provided safe, hands-on, learning experiences for kids and families in Greensboro and surrounding areas. We work to welcome all families to learn, play, and explore together throughout the Museum’s indoor/outdoor campus including 20 hands-on exhibits and staff-led programs, classes, and events.
MBCM is seeking five amazing individuals to assist with our 2025 summer camp season. Our ideal candidates would have experience working with a diverse group of children ages 4-10 years and have a growing interest in at least one of our educational focus areas: STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), food literacy and environmental education; and early childhood development. You will be teaching and learning alongside Museum Educators. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain experience working in informal education and outdoor instruction.
Reports to: Garden Educator and Lead Educator
Compensation: $12-14/hour
Pay rate is commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications.
Position Schedule and Hours:
- June 9 - August 22
- Monday - Friday
- 8:00a–4:00p or 8:00a–2:00p dependent upon camp schedule
Roles and Responsibilities
- Assisting campers ages 4-10yrs with crafts, activities, and transitions
- Nurturing a love of learning in our campers and encouraging inquisitive minds
- Positively directing behavior and maintaining campers’ safety
- Collaborate with camp team and maintain clear communication between all MBCM team members
- Aiding lead teacher with activity and snack preparation
- Perform basic cleaning duties of camp spaces
- Ensuring camp continuity in the case of lead educator absence
- Facilitating outdoor experiences in our garden including handling chickens and working with plants/soil
Qualifications
- Experience and love of working with children of varying ages in a group setting
- Excitement and curiosity about the work of the Miriam P. Brenner Children’s Museum
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Comfortable and able to work outdoors in a variety of conditions, including heat and rain
- Ability to stand, stoop, reach and bend, mobility of arms to reach, dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate large and small objects
- Up to date COVID vaccination
Preferred Qualifications:
- College degree in a related field, such as: Performing Arts, Early Childhood Education, Family Studies, etc.
- 3 years working in a classroom, daycare, after school program, or other camp setting with children under the age of 10
- Fluent in two or more languages
- Experience working in a public garden space
Job Types: Part-time, Temporary
Pay: $12.00 - $14.00 per hour
Expected hours: 30 – 40 per week
