Basic Function: Oversees the completion of work assignments by crewmembers and enforces safe working conditions with all job assignments maintaining golf course, grounds and related maintenance equipment. 


Essential duties and responsibilities: The following job duties are essential to the successful and satisfactory performance of this job. Other duties may be assigned. 


Primary Responsibilities:


Course Maintenance

1. Supervise the maintenance of all grounds and course maintenance equipment.

a. Communicate with GCM Superintendent the status of and/or required maintenance needed for golf course.

b. Record all maintenance on course. 

c. Supervise all planting, fertilizing and care of turf, plants, shrubs, trees and other facilities on the golf course including the selection and preparation of proper fertilizers and nutrients for all flora and fauna.

d. Obtain technical evaluations and recommended action plans based on soil and turf test samples.

e. Supervise the application of fertilizer, pesticide, and fungicide to ensure quality on grounds. 

f. Maintain detailed records of turf maintenance activities. 

g. Develop and maintain drainage, irrigation, and watering systems.

h. Maintain course in proper playing condition.

2. Supervise all personnel within Golf Course Maintenance Department.

a. Plan the daily duties scheduled for staff.

b. Ensure safety rules for employees on golf course.

c. Oversee, train and perform on-going course maintenance activities.

3. Assist superintendent with preventive action when weather-related problems arise.

4. Prepare requisitions, work orders, and schedules to ensure proper coordination of maintenance activities.

5. Make recommendations for the purchase of necessary equipment & supplies.

6. Ensure that chemicals, petroleum and other controlled products are used, stored, and disposed of in accordance with local, state and federal regulations; maintain required records and strives to minimize the use of chemicals and petroleum products.

7. Attends turf conferences, equipment shows, workshops and other educational programs to maintain a current knowledge of technical and turf innovations and changes that could affect the department’s operations.

8. Reports golf course conditions and all disciplinary problems to golf course superintendent.

9. Conducts daily facility security checks ensuring accurate inventory of equipment and keys.

10. Perform the duties of the subordinates, when necessary.

11. In absence of GCM Superintendent, completes necessary administrative tasks.  

12. Other duties as assigned.

  

Administration

  • Monitors all work done by outside contractors and communicates the status of each project to the General      Manager.
  • Makes cost estimates for budgeting/contract review purposes.
  • Attends staff meetings.
  • Coordinates and records the distribution of access keys to club staff members.

General

  • Keeps the work shop areas safe, clean, neat, organized, and well-lit.
  • Ensures a highly efficient departmental safety program with an emphasis on awareness, discipline, and compliance; implements an overall safety program that conforms to OSHA standards.
  • Assists The Moorings Club members with any needs they may have.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain The Moorings Yacht & Country Club commitment to member satisfaction while performing job duties.
  • Exhibit and practice professional and courteous behavior while interacting with Members, their guests or other employees. 
  • Comply with all rules, regulations and policies as stated in the Employee Handbook and/or established by the Board of Governors.
  • Adhere to the Club’s Code of Ethics and Conduct.
  • Must be cognizant of the rules and regulations of the facility for the safety and welfare of the staff and members.
  • Must be able to work well under pressure and meet all deadlines.
  • Adhere to all stated policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to appearance standards consistently.

Requirements

Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required:

Education:  

Associates Degree in Landscape, Golf Course Operations or equivalent.

Secondary coursework in Turf Science or equivalent training and/or experience.

 

Skills: 

· Supervisory skills including excellent communication.

· Skills to motivate, coordinate and direct staff in daily operations of the Club grounds maintenance.

· Emotional control, judgement, integrity and objectivity required.


Knowledge and Certificates: Commercial Pesticide Applicator license. Knowledge of tools, methods and materials used in ground construction, landscape and golf course maintenance. Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite) required.


Experience:  Five (5) years minimum golf course maintenance experience required. 


Physical Demands of Work Environment: The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met and/or encountered by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

1. Requires outdoor work in variable conditions (heat, cold, precipitation).

2. Schedule and times will vary according to needs of work performed and schedule. Weekend work may be required. 

3. While performing duties of the job, employee is regularly and frequently required to stand, stoop, bend, and reach overhead.

4. Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. 

5. Must be able to pull and lift twenty-five (25) pounds regularly and up to fifty (50) pounds occasionally.

6. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and may occasionally be loud.


Machines/Equipment/Tools used:

1. Mowers and spreaders.

2. String trimmers, edgers, sod cutter, chain saw.

3. Volt/Ohm meter.

4. Miscellaneous irrigation repair tools including but not limited to pliers’, screwdrivers, wrenches, moisture meters, etc.

5. Miscellaneous hand tools, such as, loppers, hand clippers, plugger, rakes, and shovels.

6. Other tools as provided.


Classification:  Exempt, salaried.


Supervision: GCM Staff including: Office Manager, Maintenance Foreman, Pesticides Application Specialist, Irrigation Specialist, Equipment Operator, Equipment Mechanic and Groundskeeper.
