As an independent research organization, the Morgridge Institute for Research explores uncharted scientific territory to discover tomorrow’s cures. In affiliation with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, we support researchers who take a fearless approach to advancing human health in emerging fields such as regenerative biology, metabolism, virology and biomedical imaging. Through public programming, we work to inspire scientific curiosity in everyday life.
The Research Computing group at the Morgridge Institute for Research partners with a broad range of scientists to provide computing services for the Institute, the UW-Madison campus as part of the Center for High Throughput Computing, and the nation. We are seeking students looking to work less than 30 hours per week starting May or June 2025 to assist our systems administrators and to gain valuable training and education on state-of-the-art hardware, complex systems and leading technologies. This position offers high value learning opportunities in a collaborative, flexible and supportive working environment. The is an excellent career building position for candidates interested in learning a diverse set of technologies. CHTC manages over 500 Linux servers and network devices, providing services such as Kubernetes, distributed file systems, batch systems, and databases.
The administrator assistant will help with the provisioning and management of hardware and OS infrastructure; on-the-job training will be provided on industry-standard tools for these activities. Work is normally performed during typical office hours in the office in the Discovery Building.
Requirements
- Assist with the provisioning and configuring of the physical and virtual servers and storage systems
- Assist with the installation of operating systems and software
- Assist with ensuring systems are kept up to date with the latest software releases and patches
- Monitor servers using industry standard practices and tools like check_mk and Prometheus
- Assist with documentation of all infrastructure areas maintained
- Help Maintain records, logs, and reports of assistance
- Miscellaneous duties as required

Education and Experience:
- Working toward an associate or bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer engineering or computer science or equivalent work experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Desired, but not Required:
- Some knowledge of technology environments including basic networking concepts (L2/L3, DHCP, DNS), Linux systems administration, and managing storage solutions such as basic RAID.
- Basic knowledge of software development environments like Git or GitHub
- Basic proficiency in shell and Python scripting languages
- Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines
- Ability to effectively communicate within the organization
