Job Description
The Shrine is looking for a motivated, self-starter that can work independently with limited supervision.
The successful candidate will:
- Weed, deadhead, water, divide, stake, transplant, fertilize, mulch and compost garden beds. Spreads slug bait as needed.
- Prune, water and fertilize shrubs and trees.
- Plant annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees
- Fell and remove vegetation, hand dig and weed infested soil for removal, add fill, grade, and rake.
- Routinely lift, carry and stack items up to 50 lbs. unassisted, and 100 lbs. with assistance;
- Regularly load and unload trucks of but not limited to bagged fertilizer, lime, potting soil, peat moss, shrubs and trees.
- Transport materials, supplies, tools and equipment using wheel barrows, tractor or truck.
- Clean and organize storage areas and shop.
- Operate hand and power tools and equipment such as blower, weed-eater, lawn mower, and chain saw.
- Repairs minor equipment problems and performs routine equipment maintenance.
- Joyfully provides information about the Shrine and the life of St. Therese to visitors and pilgrims.
- Participates in safety training; notifies supervisor of hazards, plant diseases, or any other problems requiring attention.
- Completes daily timesheets, accident reports and other minor paperwork as may be required in a timely manner.
Education and Job Experience
- Valid state driver's license is required.
- Two seasons of experience in a similar position is preferred.
- College education in horticulture, biology or botany, or completion of the Master Gardener a plus.
- Must successfully pass Diocesan background/screening and Safe Environment Training
High School diploma or equivalent required.
Language and Communications Skills
- The ability to communicate, listen to and understand information and ideas is essential.
- Good interpersonal and customer service
skills a must.
- Must be able to read and comprehend written instructions, operator’s manuals, and to-do lists.
About the Shrine
The Shrine is dedicated to St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the patron saint of Alaska, missionaries, and the Archdiocese of Anchorage-Juneau. She is known for her Little Way and in her autobiography, The Story of a Soul, she wrote that what really matters in life is not our great deeds, but our great love. During the summer hundreds of day visitors tour the 46-acre campus and enjoy the 14,000 sq. ft. of gardens.
