Description:

The National WWII Museum is currently seeking a Distance Learning Specialist. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Distance Learning, the Distance Learning Specialist designs and presents a variety of highly interactive, engaging, and meaningful virtual programs through the Museum’s custom-built distance learning studio in the WWII Media and Education Center. The Distance Learning Specialist also organizes and facilitates Operation Footlocker, a program that brings primary sources through artifacts to classrooms across the country. These programs are national in scope to reach school and other educational institutions. This includes point-to-point online programs, such as Virtual Field Trips, large national webcasts for thousands of viewers or participants, as well as the day-to-day operations of Operation Footlocker.

The ideal candidate exhibits proficiency in facilitating learning experiences, especially for an online audience, using educational technology, and a commitment to expanding the reach and impact of the Museum.

Requirements:
  • Create a variety of online programs in the Museum’s Education Department utilizing different technologies, like videoconferencing and webinar software, learning management systems, and other digital tools.
  • Schedule, facilitate, and present online programs to a live virtual audience including K-12 students, teachers, Museum members, and other groups as requested.
  • Schedule, create, and organize Operation Footlocker’s physical traveling trunks as well as develop a virtual component of Operation Footlocker.
  • Communicate with teachers, IT administrators, and activity coordinators to ensure smooth connections and understanding of the experiences the Museum provides.
  • Evaluate and adjust virtual programs based on feedback from colleagues and constituents.
  • Work collaboratively within the Education department along with the WWII Media Center, Curatorial and Collections departments, the Institute for the Study of War in Democracy, and outside partners like authors, WWII experts, and other museums to consult, provide materials, and present online programming.
  • Work collaboratively with the Museum’s Marketing and Communications department to creatively promote online programming to reach new audiences.
  • Participate and help out with other department-wide or Museum duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Distance Learning including video production, task forces, staff committees, and large-scale events.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree (required) or master’s (preferred) with an emphasis on educational technology, formal or informal education, museum studies, instructional design, history, or a related field.
  • Ease in using, learning, and testing the latest educational technologies is a must. Ease in being on camera is required. Proficiency with distance-learning tools is a plus.
  • Ability to design interactive and engaging online programming and match to appropriate audience level, delivery mode, and technology.
  • Three years of direct instruction in a formal or informal setting is required. A teaching certification is preferred, but not required.
  • Knowledgeable understanding of World War II history is preferred, but not required.
  • Strong organizational skills, including managing complex scheduling and project timelines.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with a diverse set of stakeholders and partners.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to push, pull, and lift weights up to 20 pounds. May require prolonged sitting, standing, and/or walking during which time objects are transported. May require bending, squatting, or reaching and occasional use of equipment.
