WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


The Biological Science Field Technician I performs a variety of routine tasks that assists with the implementation of work plans within the Mississippi Chapter’s Camp Shelby Field Office. They provide research assistance to the development and implementation of long-term life history and population monitoring of the Gopher Tortoise, Black Pinesnake, and other at-risk herptofauna species at Camp Shelby and DeSoto National Forest in South Mississippi. The Biological Field Technician I also assists with prescribed fires and provides some administrative assistance. They work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstance.

This is a one-year position with the possibility of extension with continued funding.

Are you looking for an opportunity to perform a variety of tasks outdoors while increasing your knowledge about at-risk herptofauna and their important role in Mississippi’s Longleaf Pine ecosystem? The Camp Shelby Field Office works with multiple partners to work towards recovery objectives for federally listed herptofauna and conservation of at-risk herptofauna. This includes caring for federally protected species as part of Gopher Tortoise head-starting objectives, tortoise egg collection and incubation, and installing drift fences, building traps, and assisting with other monitoring methods associated with Black Pinesnake and other at-risk herptofauna. WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Associates Degree in natural resources; environmental studies or equivalent combination of education and 6 months’ experience.
  • Experience managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to meet National Wildfire Coordinating Grout (NWCG) certification requirements to participate in prescribed fires.
  • Field experience (including herptofauna).
  • Experience with the safe operation of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) including hauling this equipment on trailers.

SALARY INFORMATION


The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $18 -$21/hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
