WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


The Deputy Director of Conservation (Deputy DoC) provides technical, strategic, and staff leadership for the Conservancy across the Asia Pacific Region. Reporting to the Lead Scientist & Director of Conservation, Asia Pacific, the Deputy DoC is a key part of helping the Asia Pacific Region manage effectively towards the Conservancy’s 2030 Goals.

The Deputy DoC will be responsible for two key functions:

  • Managing the Asia Pacific Region’s Portfolio Management Process. This is the process through which we prioritize, manage, and report on the Conservancy’s work towards the 2030 Goals. It requires strong engagement across all the Conservancy’s Asia Pacific country programs, and also with the Conservancy’s Chief Conservation Office and Global Teams, with the goal of strengthening alignment between the Asia Pacific Region an TNC’s global programs. This function also includes leading the conservation side of the Asia Pacific Region’s project review and approval process.
  • Supporting the Lead Scientist & Director of Conservation in management of the regional Asia Pacific Science & Conservation team. This includes both direct staff supervision as well as team coordination and collaboration, recruitment, budgeting, capacity building (for AP team and project teams) and impact tracking.

The Deputy DoC will be expected to maintain close working relationships with a range of internal colleagues, including other Asia Pacific Conservation and Science team colleagues and other regional teams such as Policy & Public Funding, Operations, and Finance. The Deputy DoC is expected to support the Asia Pacific Region in fundraising, including coordinating with the Conservancy’s Development teams, gathering, and providing input for fundraising proposals, and occasionally working directly with private or institutional donors.

The allocation of time across these key functions will be determined in consultation with the supervisor, however, the Deputy DoC is expected to manage a highly diverse and dynamic work plan, constantly prioritizing their and their staff’s time based on a judgement of what is most strategic and impactful.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • High level management and leadership responsibility, both internal and external to the organization.
  • Highly diversified work involves formulation, execution, and evaluation of conservation management processes within the Asia Pacific Region.
  • Direct work of major strategic importance to the Conservancy through management of multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Foster an atmosphere of alignment and collaboration in support of shared organizational priorities.
  • Foster appropriate risk taking and innovation within the organization.
  • Staff supervision including performance management and career development.
  • Make independent strategic decisions frequently based on analysis, ambiguous information, experience, and context.
  • Develop work plans and project budgets.
  • May manage a grant or contract or write fundraising proposals.
  • Extensive travel international travel (20% or more), including in variable weather conditions at remote locations.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • BA/BS degree and 10 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working in the Asia Pacific region.
  • Experience working across multiple cultures and time-zones and with diverse groups of staff and partners.
  • Experience managing a multi-disciplinary team of professionals.
  • Experience in developing program-wide strategies and policies.
  • Written and verbal fluency in English.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Superb communication and presentation skills, and ability to support and influence with consistent and clear messages and information.
  • Well-organized, self-directed, and a relationship builder.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills (e.g., communication, emotional intelligence, conflict management).
  • Multi- lingual (fluency in at least one Asia Pacific language other than English) and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 10-12 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in conservation, politics, and non-profit management.
  • Asia Pacific conservation program experience.
  • Fundraising and grant writing experience.
  • Excellent team player with experience working in multi-disciplinary teams, using influence and interpersonal skills, active listening, good judgement, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships.
  • People-oriented, intuitive, collaborative, creative, adaptable, exacting, comfortable with ambiguity and risk, and alignment with TNC values.
  • Ability to foster an environment of creativity and professional growth.
