WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
Our Media Relations Manager plays a key role in shaping the public voice of The Nature Conservancy, one of the world’s leading conservation organizations. In this dynamic role, you’ll lead the development and execution of the California chapter’s earned media and PR strategy—building meaningful relationships with top-tier California and national media outlets to generate impactful coverage of our conservation work.
As our Media Relations Manager, you will develop and foster relationships with media contacts and internal and external stakeholders. You will identify and cultivate media opportunities, securing placement in top-tier media outlets. Concurrently, you will facilitate on-going communication within and across the California chapter, marketing divisions across North America, and the larger global organization. You will provide consultation, media training, coaching, and talking points to spokespeople.
You’ll craft compelling written deliverables including press releases, story pitches, talking points, and FAQ sheets to support media outreach, while collaborating closely with TNC staff, partners, and a public relations firm to develop and elevate timely, relevant stories. From managing a strategic media calendar and trainings, to amplifying stories through social media and internally, your work will ensure our conservation impacts reach broad and influential audiences. You’ll support our organization's thought leadership by identifying and preparing speakers for high-profile events. You may supervise staff and travel occasionally, and you will be part of a collaborative, mission-driven team dedicated to making a measurable difference.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU
Are you a strong writer, relationship-builder, and strategic thinker? Do you adapt quickly and lead with creativity and clarity?
You are an ideal candidate if you are a strategic communications professional with experience developing and executing media and engagement plans, managing reputational risk and crisis communications, and pitching compelling stories to national media. You have a proven track record of cultivating relationships with reporters, subject matter experts, and internal stakeholders.
You are skilled at translating complex topics into a clear, accessible narrative. You are adept at creating digital content, managing multiple stories at once, and presentations. If you are also familiar with communication technologies, budget management, and working within decentralized organizations, your experience is extremely compelling.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Bachelor’s degree in related field and 7 years of related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Experience managing and implementing media strategies and measuring results.
- Experience writing, editing and proofreading messages for targeted audiences.
- Experience cultivating and managing client relationships.
- Experience developing media relations networks.
- Experience implementing and managing multiple complex projects.

SALARY INFORMATION
The starting pay for this position is within the range of $68,640 – $93,870 for annual base salary. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA and state of employment is California. The salary range for this position will the following based on location:
San Diego, Fresno, Sacramento, Bakersfield, Ventura, and most CA locations: $80,300 - $85,960
Los Angeles county and the San Francisco Bay area: $87,700 - $93,870
If your location in California is not listed, the hiring team will confirm salary range with candidates during the interview process. Where a successful candidate’s pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including the candidate's location, qualifications, skills, and experience. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
