The Puget Sound Stewardship Technician, under the direction of the Puget Sound Stewardship Manager, is responsible for implementing key stewardship activities for the Washington Chapter’s Port Susan Bay Preserve and other preserves within the Puget Sound region. Essential Fu Nctions
The Technician will have primary responsibility for implementing post-restoration stewardship and monitoring at Port Susan Bay Preserve, including managing contracts, monitoring vegetation, evaluating project outcomes, coordinating with partners, contractors, and staff, and mapping and treating invasive plants. The Technician is responsible for helping with the development of invasive species treatment plans, scheduling and overseeing work crews and contractors in the field, maintaining tools and equipment, maintaining site infrastructure, and occasional volunteer event management. As funding and time allows, they may implement stewardship and monitoring activities for other TNC preserves in the Puget Sound region.
To accomplish the essential functions of this position, the Technician will interact primarily with the Puget Sound Stewardship Manager, Port Susan Bay Adaptive Management Team, and multiple partners, contractors, and volunteers. Limited interaction with preserve visitors may also occur.

SALARY INFORMATION
The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $ 53,600 – $ 55,600 for annual base salary. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. - Land management (65%)
- Project management and partner coordination (25%)
- Community engagement (10%)
- Work in collaboration with Port Susan Bay Adaptive Management team on post-implementation stage of the Port Susan Bay restoration project.
- Provide planning assistance for post-restoration stewardship at Port Susan Bay, particularly for invasive plant treatment and monitoring.
- Coordinate stewardship and monitoring in Stillaguamish Delta in close communication with Stillaguamish Tribe natural resources staff, Skagit River System Cooperative, and other participating partners.
- In collaboration with Puget Sound Stewardship Manager, gather, synthesize and apply current best management practices for invasives species in tidally-influenced systems.
- Assist in purple martin monitoring at Port Susan Bay and contribute to a coordinated regional monitoring effort.
- As funding allows, conducting stewardship work at Foulweather Bluff Preserve, Fisher Slough Preserve, Pratt Preserve, and TNC’s Upper Skagit properties may be expected of this position.
- Coordinate contractors and field crews (supplies, equipment, logistics, training and orienting).
- Complete work tasks in the field directly as needed, including field data collection, invasive species treatment, etc.
- Use GPS technology (field tablet, handheld GPS unit) to support mapping and monitoring projects.
- Coordinate and oversee work crews and interns in the field.
- Coordinate volunteer stewardship events or individual volunteers as needed.
- Complete data entry and quality checks for field data collected at Port Susan Bay and other sites as applicable.
- This is a 22-month term position, from February 2025 to December 31, 2026. Candidates who can commit to this duration will be preferred.
- The position will be based at TNC’s Mt. Vernon office. Alternatively, a home office location within 60 miles of Port Susan Bay Preserve or being based out of TNC’s Seattle office are also possible.
- Will work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances, with responsibility for personal safety.
- May work under minimal and/or distant supervision; may make some independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context.
- Schedule is generally Monday to Friday, 35-40 hours, with fluctuations due to seasonality of fieldwork, and occasional weekend work is required. Flexible work arrangements are possible.
- Must be willing to undertake periodic travel to Seattle or other WA locations for organizational meetings.
- Applicant will be expected to meet TNC’s Youth Safety qualifications for volunteer events.
- One (1) year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or similar field, BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to act in accordance with our WA Equity Statement and Statement of Commitment to Indigenous Peoples; be respectful of differences of identity and/or beliefs, and successfully work across those differences to meet work objectives.
- Ability to conduct physical work in muddy, wet conditions, in inclement weather and hazardous terrain.
- Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
- Must possess or be able to obtain Washington State Pesticide Applicator license.
- Basic knowledge of hand and power tools (use and safety) used for field stewardship work.
- Experience using applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Web Browsers.
- 1 – 2 years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with herbicide use and safety practices and equipment.
- Previous experience in tool maintenance.
- Experience with GPS and GIS for field data applications.
- Familiarity with tablet-based data collection.
- Experience, coursework, or training in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles.
- Experience with field data collection.
- Experience managing volunteers or interns.
- Ability to recognize plant and animal species of western Washington necessary to complete preserve management activities.
- Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices in Puget Sound conservation, land management and natural resource preservation/conservation.
- Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
- Valid driver's license and good driving record.
