The goal of STEP is to create pathways for people seeking to gain experience with a conservation focused organization. We currently offer paid internships in a range of disciplines across our Virginia Teams. With a focus on recruiting and developing a diverse staff, we strive to create an environment where people of all backgrounds, experiences, and identities feel welcomed to participate in conservation.
All STEP interns will receive an orientation, professional development webinars, and chances to visit TNC sites. Along the way, interns will have the opportunity to broaden their experiences through interactions with Nature Conservancy staff and partners
WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU
TNC’s Virginia Aquatic Resources Trust Fund (VARTF) team is looking for an intern to assist with their 30th anniversary celebration celebrating thirty years of successful stream and wetland restoration. The intern will assist VARTF’s in a storytelling and communications project that will highlight Virginia’s aquatic ecosystems and feature thirty of VARTF’s best projects. The intern will work with VARTF staff to develop an ArcGIS story map framework that will be used as a template for each of the thirty projects. The intern will then develop written content to be used in the story maps by conducting verbal and video interviews of staff, partners, and reviewing project files and photos. The intern may choose to visit some project sites to collect additional photos, video, and/or audio.
This position may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Interns will dedicate 5% of their time to professional development activities through STEP.

Orientation: All interns are required to attend a two-day orientation in Charlottesville on May 28-29, 2025
Pay: $17.50/hour

Primary Responsibilities Include
- Developing a communication framework utilizing ArcGIS Storymaps
- Video interviewing key staff and partners about VARTF restoration project
- Writing narratives about successful VARTF aquatic restoration projects
- Building ArcGIS Storymaps
- Recent college Graduate (within one year), or Current Graduate Student
- Coursework or other training with ArcGIS Storymaps
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word
- Basic camera/video skills
- Strong writing skills
- Interest/knowledge in conservation/environmental field
- Willingness to learn/develop new skills
- ArcGIS experience, particularly ArcGIS Online and Storymaps
- Experience with writing narratives and/or science communication
- Knowledge of aquatic ecosystems and/or aquatic restoration
- Video editing ability
