The goal of STEP is to create pathways for people seeking to gain experience with a conservation focused organization. We currently offer paid internships in a range of disciplines across our Virginia Teams. With a focus on recruiting and developing a diverse staff, we strive to create an environment where people of all backgrounds, experiences, and identities feel welcomed to participate in conservation.

All STEP interns will receive an orientation, professional development webinars, and chances to visit TNC sites. Along the way, interns will have the opportunity to broaden their experiences through interactions with Nature Conservancy staff and partners

WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU

TNC’s Chesapeake Bay Wetlands Program is looking for an intern to assist with the advancement of non-tidal and tidal wetland restoration in Virginia. Specifically, the intern will be working in GIS to identify and prioritize potential wetland restoration sites on public lands and other large conservation properties, visiting selected sites to ground-truth GIS data and analysis, and will be working closely with wetland scientists from TNC, DWR, and other organizations to help develop a large-scale restoration plan. This position will be primarily GIS-focused, though field work, report development, and partner meetings will be components, as well. The intern may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Interns will dedicate 5% of their time to professional development activities through STEP.

Primary Responsibilities Include

  • Digitizing wetland and agricultural features from LiDAR, aerial imagery, and other data.
  • Developing basin-wide assessments that identify wetland potential using various GIS layers and existing analyses.
  • Researching historic records of ditching and wetland alteration through NRCS offices and other resources.
  • Visiting selected potential sites with TNC, DWR, DU, and other partner scientists to ground-truth GIS features or analyses.
  • Communicating and working closely with various partners and wetland scientists to understand conservation priorities for each partner organization.
  • Developing a prioritization and restoration plan, as a report and a GIS map, under the guidance of TNC and partner staff.

What You'll Bring

  • Recent college Graduate (within one year), or Current Graduate Student
  • Environmental science/ecology background
  • Advanced coursework or analysis experience with ARCMap/ ARCPro
  • Proficient in writing reports using Microsoft software
  • Experience with written and oral communication (phone, email, in-person)

Desired Qualifications

  • Education or experience with wetland restoration ecology
  • Education or other training with Virginia’s habitats and species
  • Experience organizing and analyzing large datasets
  • Experience with ecological field work

Additional Job Information

Schedule: 35 hours/week for 10 weeks from May 28 – August 8, 2025

Orientation: All interns are required to attend a two-day orientation in Charlottesville on May 28-29, 2025

Pay: $17.50/hour

Location: Richmond, VA
