The New Community School is currently hiring a Middle School English Teacher for the 2025-2026 school year.
This teacher will teach small classes of students in a supportive, professional environment.
Job Description:
The Middle School English Teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment that develops in each student the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are fundamental to effective communication and literate citizenship; that develops appreciation for literature of all types; that motivates students to read widely for information and recreation; and develops critical judgment of written and oral communications transmitted by mass and social media.
Essential Duties:
- Teaches content and skills in English language, literature, composition, and reading.
- Adapts English material and methods to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of each student.
- Utilizes standards-based assessment to determine students’ mastery of learning objectives.
- Implements evidence-based teaching and learning practices and designs a full range of meaningful assessments in which students are regularly asked to demonstrate understanding.
- Explores and integrates a range of resources, including technology, to engage, enhance and extend learning goals.
- Understands the role of social, emotional and physical wellbeing in the teaching and learning process and encourages the development of lifelong healthy behaviors.
- Encourages students to think independently and express ideas.
- Serves as the faculty advisor to a small group of students.
- Facilitates ongoing communication with parents regarding student progress, including formal written reports.
- Participates in the school’s extensive pre-service/in-service training and mentoring program.
- Contributes to the school’s rich student life program.
- Contributes to other aspects of the school.
- Performs other supervisory duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: The ideal candidate:
- Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Must be eligible or possess Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement to teach English.
- Must possess a strong interest in learning disabilities, exploring varied instructional strategies, and working with students who have struggled in previous school placements.
- Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents, and the broader community.
- Must possess a desire and willingness to grow professionally and work as part of a team.
Salary Information: Salary is commensurate with experience.
