What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of College Counseling position at The New School?
Duties/Responsibilities:
Manage a caseload of 15-25 students, providing guidance to those students and their families throughout the college search and application process, including supporting students considering alternative paths and gap years
- Develop a calendar of college counseling programming for students and families
- Plan and teach college and career counseling classes for students in grades 9-12 as part of our Seminar program
- Facilitate meetings between students and college representatives visiting the school
- Engage in professional development through visiting college campuses, attending college counseling-related conferences and workshops, and staying informed on topics related to college admissions trends
- Coordinate the calendar of standardized testing for students, including scheduling test dates, overseeing the administration of tests, and providing pre- and post-test counseling
- Teach 1-2 classes as part of our academic curriculum and Year-End Survey term
- Possibly serve as an advisor
- Attend faculty meetings and participate in the school community by attending events and supporting students and colleagues
Perform other duties as assigned
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of developmental and educational issues related to adolescents
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Three or more years of experience as a high school college counselor or college admissions officer.
Experience in independent schools a plus
Physical Requirements with or without accommodations:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer or standing to teach.
- Must be able to lift or move up to 40 pounds at times.
Must be able to traverse classroom and adjust one’s tone and height, by bending, leaning, stooping or kneeling, in order to teach each child.
Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception.
