What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary Art Collection Manager position at The New School?
The New School Art Collection is currently seeking a part-time maternity leave replacement for 6 months starting June 15th, 2024 for the position of Temporary Art Collection Manager. This is a 1 day a week or two half-days week position (totaling 7 hours) with contingency hours and will report to the Associate Provost for Libraries, Collections and Academic Services.
The candidate will work independently and must be self-driven, have knowledge of collection management methods and current best practices, skilled in handling artworks professionally, must be attentive to detail, as well as possess strong problem solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain artwork locations and collection records via ArtBase database.
- Update and maintain associated artwork files via shared online catalog.
- Work on annual physical inventory (location check, documentation, light condition check) of artworks displayed on campus.
- Work closely with Associate Provost and Executive Secretary for Libraries, Collections and Academic Services to identify, plan and execute essential art collection projects.
- Keep ledger of all Art Collection hanging requests.
- Work with our facilities and buildings team to identify and move artworks due to unexpected construction.
- When needed, personally deinstall and move small framed artworks around campus using a c-bin and small hand tools (i.e. power drill) .
- When needed, plan and oversee the installation of artworks including booking and directing our freelance art handlers.
- When needed, organize the shipping, receiving and processing of incoming and outgoing loans.
WORK MODE
- On-Campus Position – This position is expected to work on-campus during regularly scheduled work hours due to the nature of the work being that which is not feasible, or not in the best interest of the organization, to be performed remotely.
HOURLY RATE
- The hourly rate range for this position is $39-$44, based on experience.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Knowledge of basic registrarial skills and best practices; previous experience in a registrar or collection management position required.
- Experience using ArtBase (or comparable database program) essential.
- Experience overseeing artwork installations and art handlers.
- Knowledge of basic art handling skills.
- Ability to lift 25 lbs and operate small hand or power tools, while maintaining safe workplace practices and procedures.
- Excellent oral and written skills; ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically.
- Strong organizational skills, self motivated; ability to handle and prioritize detailed projects and realize them to completion.
