The New York Public Library (NYPL) has been an essential provider of free books, information, ideas, and education for all New Yorkers for more than 100 years. NYPL's neighborhood libraries in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island—many of which date to Andrew Carnegie's visionary philanthropy at the turn of the 20th century—are being transformed into true centers of educational innovation and service, and vital community hubs that provide far more than just free books and materials.
NYPL is seeking a Porter to maintain an environment that is clean, safe and comfortable for our Library users and employees.
Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of Operations Supervisor and/or Building Manager, the Porter:
- Cleans all assigned areas in, around and outside NYPL buildings
- Sweeps, scrubs, waxes and polishes floors, vacuums and shampoos carpets
- Dusts furniture, book shelves and equipment
- Handles snow removal
- Transports trash or discarded materials to disposal area and push dumpsters to and from the curb for garbage and/or recycling collection
- Move, remove, and/or set up furniture inside specified rooms for special functions as directed
- May be assigned to any NYPL building
- Performs related duties as required
Required Education & Certifications
- High School Diploma or GED and prior custodial experience
- Knowledge of methods, materials, chemicals, disinfectants, and equipment used in janitorial work; and safety practices in janitorial work
- Problem-solve maintenance issues as they arise
- Knowledge of hazards and applicable safety rules by understanding Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and chemical mixing instructions to prevent injuries
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to interact with others in a courteous and professional manner
- Heavy lifting may be required
- Must pass physical examination
