New York, NY Full Time
POSTED ON 3/9/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 4/6/2025
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Job Description

The New York Times Video department is seeking a Video Journalist to focus on general assignment, breaking and continuing news coverage in a range of visual formats, from short-form videos to multimedia articles to groundbreaking interactives — all geared toward a growing mobile audience.

You are a dogged reporter with a background in digital video journalism and a track record of producing compelling and timely news reports in the 1-5 minute range. Expertise in U.S. domestic policy matters — with strong sources and experience getting unique visual access — is preferred. Your work will also include working with other journalists and featuring them on camera.

You are a self-starter and quick-thinker who is able and eager to jump on the stories of the day (or week) with fresh ideas for original visual news coverage. You should be able to pitch stories, secure access and deliver impactful and immediate reporting that drives the story forward. You also have expertise and interest in open source video verification to help develop and advance stories.

You are comfortable producing in a variety of settings, whether you report from your desk in the newsroom or on the ground. We are looking for someone who thrives under the pressure of daily newsroom deadlines and has a track record of working efficiently while juggling multiple projects at a time. You must also be willing to travel frequently, and on short notice.

This is a hybrid position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. We will also consider candidates based in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to breaking news and produce video stories in a range of formats, sometimes in collaboration with other newsroom colleagues, both remotely and in the field.
  • Pitch news and enterprise coverage opportunities.
  • Carry out all aspects of video production, including research, reporting, producing, writing and publishing.
  • Use news wire services and social media to review and clear footage for publication.
  • Apply open-source research skills, including sourcing audio-visual evidence from a variety of platforms, and utilizing signals from social media for news reporting and storytelling.
  • Write succinct and effective copy for video assets (headlines, summaries, captions etc.)
  • Set up and monitor video live feeds, and produce text and graphics-led news packages as needed.
  • Shoot and edit as needed.
  • Demonstrating support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • This role reports to a Senior Producer, Video.

Basic Qualifications

  • 4 years of journalism experience in a digital or broadcast newsroom.
  • Experience with all aspects of video production, including strong pitching, writing and reporting skills.
  • Experience reporting and producing video in the field under tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of current events with significant experience covering breaking news, both in the U.S. and internationally.
  • Strong editorial news judgment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Canon video camera systems and the ability to shoot professional-quality video in the field and in studio.
  • The ability to edit quickly and accurately with Adobe Premiere Pro.
  • Experience with UGC verification and/or foreign language skills.
  • General knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for third-party and acquired visuals.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to a daily, unpredictable news cycle and production environment.
  • Willingness and flexibility to travel on short notice, and also work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others while maintaining a positive attitude.
