The Nightingale-Bamford School seeks a full-time Director of Safety and Security to lead and manage all school safety and security aspects. This role involves developing and implementing comprehensive safety strategies, collaborating with external agencies (law enforcement, first responders, etc.), and ensuring a secure environment for the entire school community. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills and a deep commitment to student and community safety. Diplomacy, flexibility, and adaptability are essential in fostering a warm, caring, and effective learning environment. The Director of Safety and Security is responsible for the comprehensive safety and security of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors across all school locations. This role involves proactive leadership, strategic planning, and hands-on management to ensure a safe and secure learning environment. 

This is a full time 12-month, full-time, exempt position that reports to the Director of Building Operations and Capital Management, starting on April 1, 2025 or earlier.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to): 

  • Lead and manage all safety and security personnel, including scheduling, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Ensure staff compliance with all policies and procedures, maintaining required certifications and licenses.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce comprehensive safety and security protocols, including emergency response, risk prevention, and regulatory compliance.
  • Conduct regular safety assessments, inspections, and risk management audits.
  • Manage security technology systems (surveillance, access control, etc.) and vendor relationships.
  • Oversee visitor management, traffic control, and facility security.
  • Maintain building security plans and safety manuals.
  • Develop and manage emergency response plans and conduct drills, ensuring compliance with NYC and NYS regulations.
  • Provide emergency response and support, including after-hours availability.
  • Serve as the first responder to security incidents and advise stakeholders on safety measures.
  • Cultivate a proactive safety culture and liaise with law enforcement, fire departments, and other external agencies.
  • Conduct safety training and presentations for staff and students.
  • Collaborate with all school departments to ensure a safe environment.
  • Maintain accurate records, conduct investigations, and submit required reports.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Review and implement national best practices.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • 10 years in law enforcement, security, or safety (preferably in education).
  • 5 years in a supervisory security role.
  • Valid driver’s license and NYS Fire and Life Safety Director certification.
  • Proven leadership in security team management and personnel training.
  • Expertise in emergency management, risk assessment, and security technology.
  • Strong knowledge of safety regulations and best practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to remain composed in high-stress situations.
  • Strong problem-solving and multitasking abilities.
  • Proficiency in security systems, Google Suite, or related software.
  • A shared understanding of the mission of the School and a demonstrated commitment to the core principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. 
  • Must demonstrate cultural competence and be able to understand, appreciate, and work with constituents across varied backgrounds and cultures. 
  • Excellent attention to detail, professional attitude, good judgment, a high level of integrity and a strong work ethic.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with varied constituents. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and earn the trust of the school community.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Endurance: Perform duties for standard and extended shifts (up to 16 hours in emergencies).
  • Mobility: Navigate school property, including stairs, and assist/carry individuals if needed.
  • Physical Stamina: Stand, sit, bend, kneel, lift, and carry as required.
  • Environmental Adaptability: Work outdoors in various weather conditions.

SALARY RANGE: 

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, this position's annual salary range is $130,000- $140,000. When extending an offer, Nightingale considers factors such as (but not limited to) the position's scope and responsibilities, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, and market and organizational considerations.
