This position is a leave replacement for a Middle School Humanities teaching position (Grade 8). Candidates should be prepared to teach two sections of Middle School Humanities, an interdisciplinary, double-credit course inclusive of Social Studies, English Language Arts, and Geography. A general description of the curriculum for the 8th Grade Humanities course is provided in the following paragraph.
Humanities 8 is a global history and literature course that focuses on three regions of the world: West Africa, Central America and the Caribbean, and South Asia, as case studies for exploring the interplay among geography, history, culture, literature, and the arts. In each of the curricular units, students build foundational skills for studying history and literature: note taking; identifying, vetting, using, and documenting sources; annotating texts; summarizing and synthesizing; and informative, argumentative, and narrative writing. A rich medley of resources – ranging from artifacts to artwork, music, literature, maps, essays, podcasts, short stories, and novels – support our exploration of the historical and cultural causes and consequences that have contributed to the history, culture, and current political realities of each region studied.
Essential Functions Include:
- Teach two sections of Middle School Humanities, a double-credit course, both sections of which meet daily.
- Serve as an advisor to a group of students by guiding their social and academic progress.
- Coordinate curricula with other teachers and grade level teachers.
- Participate fully in the life of the school which includes collaborating effectively and collegially with a grade-level team, and department; engage regularly in formal, ongoing professional development; support colleagues and the school by substituting for absent teachers; participate in meetings, committees, and community gatherings; and know, understand, and uphold the mission, philosophy and values of the school. All teachers contribute to the school mission and community with activities such as supporting student SEL, interest groups (clubs), social events, and grade level trips.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the school's mission, values, and philosophy, especially related to diversity and the environment.
- A commitment to a learning and working culture where all community members feel seen, valued, and heard.
- A bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Has a strong pedagogical toolkit for student accessibility to curriculum and success in the classroom
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least 4-5 years teaching experience teaching in a Humanities, Social Studies and/or English Language Arts department.
- Experience and interest in teaching different grade-levels and/or subject matter.
- Experience developing and implementing new curriculum.
- An ELL certificate or endorsement and experience working with an international student population (for ELL positions only).
Compensation:
Salary is highly competitive with top independent schools in the region and commensurate with education and experience and includes all professional responsibilities of a teacher, both in the classroom and community contributions. Salary range is $54,081 - $98,622 (annual) and is based on education, years of teaching experience, and professional development. Additional compensation is available for teaching certifications. Leave replacement positions are not benefit eligible at this time.
