Primary Duties And Responsibilities
- Prepare and review advanced one-line diagrams, project copes, and cost estimates for substation projects
- Conduct resource planning, oversight, and the assignment of tasks and projects to resources in coordination with other managers.
- Engineer and design lightning protection, grounding, and equipment replacement and repair for substations
- Make necessary changes and corrections to drawings and documentation
- Verify the proper use of equipment and material according to project documentation standards and codes
- Verify that material and equipment are ordered and delivered on time for substation construction
- Travel to project sites for walk downs and gathering information to develop the correct requirements for the projects to scope and develop substations
- Function as a project lead for substation projects
- Lead, facilitate, and coordinate work activities of others within the work group, team, department, or those external to complete substation projects
- Provide training and guidance to lower-level employees
- Identify and initiate corrective action when substation project objectives are not being met
- Interpret codes and regulations and develop standards for construction projects
- Promote engineering professionalism and standards
- Develop, recommends, and implement plans by establishing goals, objectives, and requirements that include scheduling, resources, cost and quality management information for complex engineering
- Position requires 20-25% travel (travel to company locations and to client/job sites as needed)
- Review advanced substation construction drawings such as electrical arrangements, plan and section views, grounding, cable and conduit drawings.
- Intermediate understanding in conducting studies such as lightning protection, grounding, and equipment replacement and repair for substations
- Review substation construction drawings such as one line diagrams, schematics, front views, and wiring diagrams.
- Intermediate understanding in conducting studies such as battery sizing, AC and DC station service sizing, voltage drop, CT saturation, etc.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Must have a proven background of building client relationships.
- 8 years of relevant work experience
- Experience assisting in operational functions (interviewing, volunteering for career fairs, covering staff meetings, being a part of committee's, etc.)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution
- Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution will count toward years of experience
- A PE and/or P.Eng License is required
- Advanced ability to perform design calculations such as battery sizing, AC and DC loads, system component selection, power transformer and circuit breaker selection, circuit protection, control and power cable selection and rating, bus bars, fittings, insulators, ground grid design, and lightning protection
- Advanced knowledge of standards and codes such as IEEE, ANSI, NEC and NESC
- Advanced (SME) understanding of equipment, material ordering, and bills of material for substation construction
- Strong experience in communication with client and project stakeholders
- Advanced understanding in creation of continual improvement materials for development of other designers
- Strong knowledge in leadership of design teams
- Strong experience in the mentorship of others
- Basic understanding of operational business concepts (estimation, labor charging, basic finance, client development, quality assurance, company SOPs).
- Excellent listening skills, with an ability to follow through on commitments.
