Assistant GM / Head Bartender

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The selected candidate will become the Assistant General Manager & Head Bartender for a new independent upscale Gastropub in downtown Mesa, AZ opening January 2017.  Reporting to the Owner/GM, the Assistant GM & Head Bartender will have direct leadership of the beverage program and assist the GM in leading the Front of the House Staff.  The person selected for this position will be groomed to eventually assume the position of General Manager. This is a salaried plus tip position. Job functions will include:

• Act as Head Bartender several shifts per week; Also serve as Shift Manager for several shifts per week
• Developing and refining cocktail recipes in accordance with the Owner’s vision for the beverage program,
• Selecting beverage vendors, ordering inventory, and actively monitoring beverage costs,
• Assisting the GM in hiring, training, and scheduling the front of the house staff; actively monitoring labor costs
• Designing innovative presentations and delivering high quality, mouth-watering beverage products
• Positively interacting with customers and staff,
• Maintaining freshness of product
• Maintaining high quality service for self and front of the house staff
• Supervising and coordinating activities of front of the house staff
• Other duties as assigned by the Owner/GM

REQUIRED SKILLS:

• Business skills. The selected candidate will intimately understand the restaurant business. They should be skilled at administrative tasks, such as accounting and personnel management, and be able to manage a restaurant efficiently and profitably.
• Leadership skills. The selected candidate must have the ability to motivate servers and bartenders and develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with both them and the kitchen staff.
• Communication skills. The selected candidate must be extremely friendly and outgoing and interact positively with customers and staff. Additionally, because the pace of the restaurant can be hectic during peak dining hours, the selected candidate must be able to communicate orders clearly and effectively to other members of the staff.
• The selected candidate must be creative in order to develop and prepare interesting and innovative cocktail recipes. They should be able to use various ingredients to create appealing beverages for their customers.
• Bartending Skills. The selected candidate will need excellent manual dexterity, including proper pouring and multi-tasking skills. Additionally, the selected candidate must know ‘by heart’ all common drink recipes and have the ability to learn house specials.  They must not only know these recipes, but be able to instruct others on them.
• Time-management skills. The selected candidate must efficiently manage their time and the time of their staff. They must ensure that customers receive friendly and timely service, especially during busy hours.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

• High school education or equivalent (some formal culinary training highly desired)
• Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a bartender
• Must be computer literate
• Comprehend and communicate written and spoken English
• Drug free – Must pass drug screening test
• Good Moral Character – Must pass background test
• Legally authorized to work in the United States

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. on a frequent basis, push/pull up to 40 lbs., carry up to 30 lbs. for up to 100 yards, and constantly stand and walk.
• Requires occasional stooping, bending, twisting, crouching, kneeling and crawling.
• Regularly required to use hands to handle, or feel; talk; see; and/or hear. Must be physically able to handle, grasp and reach frequently throughout the workday.

SCHEDULE & SALARY:

• The Assistant GM & Head Bartender will work with the Owner/GM to develop his/her individual work schedule, but the expectation will typically be 50-55 hrs/week on a 6 day work week. Working evenings, weekends, and holidays can be expected.
• This is a position that will be a combination of base salary plus tips.
