Job Title: Data Scientist Department: ERIK | Human Performance Collaborative We are seeking a skilled and highly motivated Data Scientist with experience in human performance research to join the Ohio State Human Performance Collaborative (HPC). HPC is a campus–wide initiative out of the Office of Research that connects assets to create diverse collaborative research teams with the goal of advancing the study of human performance with enhanced focus on performance optimization, mind-body wellness and human machine teaming. The collaborative aims to conduct life-changing human performance research, impactful community outreach, and enlightening educational programs and content to serve the local to global population. This position will play a crucial role in analyzing and deriving insights from large-scale datasets related to human performance, health, and wellness, as well as discover and develop data platform tools. Work will contribute to the development of evidence-based strategies and interventions to enhance human performance all domains (sleep and relaxation, team interaction, cognition, emotional wellness, mental fitness, physical wellness, food & nutrition, and physical exercise) and various populations including athletes, first responders, and healthcare. The role will report directly to the HPC Faculty Director. The individual in this role will be responsible for the following performance objectives: Collect, clean, and analyze large and complex datasets related to human performance, utilizing statistical techniques, machine learning algorithms, and data mining approaches. Identify and engineer relevant features from diverse data sources to enhance predictive modeling and analysis of human performance variables. Develop and implement advanced machine learning models and algorithms to predict and understand human performance outcomes, such as physical capabilities, cognitive function, and health indicators. Collaborate with researchers and domain experts to design experiments and studies. Create effective data visualizations and reports to communicate research findings and insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, facilitating evidence-based decision-making. Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including researchers, clinicians, coaches and engineers, to understand research objectives, data requirements, and implementation of findings in practical settings. Ensure compliance with ethical guidelines and data privacy regulations with handling sensitive human performance data. Stay abreast of the latest advancements in human performance research, data science, and related fields, and apply new methodologies and tools to enhance research capabilities. Plans and writes manuscripts, articles, abstracts and research reports for publication in scientific journals. Attends and presents research results at national and international scientific conferences and workshops. Actively contributes to developing, writing, editing and critiquing research grant proposals. Participates in developing and establishing working relationships with current & potential sponsors of research. Serves as a consultant to other investigators in area of expertise. Trains graduate students, undergraduate students, and technicians within the university. Required: Master degree, Ph.D. preferred, in Data Science, Computer Science, Human Performance, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related discipline. A minimum of 6 years of strong expertise in statistical analysis, experimental design, and predictive modeling techniques applied to human performance research. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R, along with experience in data manipulation, data wrangling, and SQL for data retrieval. Solid understanding of mincing learning algorithms, feature selection techniques, model evaluation, and hyperparameter optimization applied to human performance data. Familiarity with human performance research, including physiological measurements, biomechanics, exercise science, cognitive performance, and related areas. Excellent collaboration skills to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, along with strong written and verbal communication skills to present complex ideas to diverse audiences. Experience in human performance research including both lab and applied-research settings. Direct experience with physiological monitoring applied research. Evidence for conducting and dissemination research results through archival publication and professional conference presentations required. Desired: Demonstrated experience performing on externally funded research for the Department of Defense and Federal Government.
