The Ohio State is committed to recognizing and celebrating faculty excellence on national and international stages. The Office of Faculty Affairs is seeking a Director of Faculty Honorifics, to lead a strategic and proactive approach to faculty recognition. This new role is pivotal in managing faculty award nominations, identifying opportunities, and coordinating recognition efforts. The Director will ensure our faculty are effectively positioned for prestigious honors through a proactive and structured approach.

About the Office of Faculty Affairs

The Office of Faculty Affairs is a resource unit, in the Office of Academic Affairs, dedicated to developing, curate and connect academic resources, programming and structures to support faculty success across the entire career life cycle. Faculty Affairs officers focus on providing an unparalleled set of services to academic units and individuals that are guided by principles of transparency, efficiency and inclusive excellence.

Performance Objectives

First three months

Become familiar with the overall structure, resources, and processes of faculty awards across the entire institution. Begin to develop an understanding of Ohio State’s award structure and the national landscape of prestigious and highly prestigious honorifics. Become familiar with Academic Analytics as a platform to identify faculty suitable for highly prestigious awards. Become familiar with university processes surrounding limited submission opportunities. Begin to build relationships with partners across colleges, ERIK, and advancement. Effectively manage the research, writing, and communication with stakeholders, with coaching from the Associate Vice Provost (AVP).

First six months

Begin to streamline and lead all pre- and post-award processes. Begin to streamline and lead the limited submission process in close collaboration with the Office of Foundations Relations and Office of Research. Begin to develop on-demand resources, such as toolkits, worksheets, and narrated presentations that guide faculty, unit award committees, and college leaders in identifying award opportunities, preparing string nomination materials, and fostering a culture of recognition across the institution. Coordinate with Foundations Relations the long-term tracking systems for limited submissions, and help develop an annual benchmarking process to gauge success and direct future efforts. Effectively support the AVP, Senior Vice Provost (SVP), by liaising with internal partners to advance top priority award nominations via campus visits, letters of support, and other efforts. Effectively and independently manage the trainings and support of faculty in identifying opportunities to external awards and preparing portfolio for nominations.

First 12 months

Streamline and effectively lead the external award processes, in collaboration with AVP, SVP, OFR operations staff, and colleges. Streamline and effectively co-lead the unit’s limited submission processes, in collaboration with the Office of Foundations Relations and Office of Research. Develop and implement long-term tracking systems for award nominations and top faculty to be nominated, and an annual benchmarking process to gauge success and direct future efforts. Continue to effectively support the AVP, Senior Vice Provost (SVP), by liaising with internal partners to advance top priority award nominations via campus visits, letters of support, and other efforts. Continue to effectively and independently manage the trainings and support of faculty in identifying opportunities to external awards and preparing portfolio for nominations.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four year’s professional experience in research administration, business operations, public administration, project management, or similar experience.

Desired

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in higher education administration, faculty development, research support, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in managing award nominations or similar processes
  • Demonstrated success at grant/fundraising proposal writing at either Federal, industrial, and/or philanthropic levels.
  • Knowledge of national and international award opportunities in academia.
  • Familiarity with the Ohio State University research enterprise/grants infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of Academic Analytics in support of faculty performance indicators.

Compensation:

  • Salary commensurate with experience.
  • Full-time position with benefits.

The target hiring range for this job profile is $ 69,400 - 79,956 The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limited to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.

Key Responsibilities:

50% Administration/Operations of External Awards Strategy

  • Developing and Managing Strategy: Develop and implement a comprehensive faculty awards strategy that increases external award nominations and success rates, encompassing national and international opportunities. This includes convening OSU recipients of highly prestigious awards, strategic relationship building, and regular outreach.
  • Identifying Candidates: Identify faculty candidates for key awards and collaborate with departments to develop robust nomination pipelines. This involves utilizing data analytics (e.g Academic Analytics) and relationships, to understand the strengths and achievements of faculty members and aligning them with appropriate awards.
  • Guidance and Support: Provide guidance and support for faculty in preparing competitive award applications. This includes offering workshops, one-on-one coaching, and feedback on application materials to enhance their chances of success.
  • Coordinating Nominations: Coordinate the nomination processes in collaboration with unit award chairs, including gathering necessary materials, identifying potential nominators/sponsors, working with letter writers, and tracking deadlines. Ensure all submissions are timely and meet the specific requirements of each award.
  • Streamline Nomination Support: Create template and toolkits, build a faculty awards database, and offer workshops and consultations.

25% Collaborations and Coordination Across Enterprise

  • Collaboration with Advancement: Collaborate with the Foundation Relations team to support and enhance the efforts to select and nominate strong candidates to limited submission opportunities (LSO) funded by private philanthropic foundations.
    • Post LSO according to our agreed-upon calendar,
    • Announce upcoming LSOs via the Faculty Newsletter,
    • Complete the rubric with productivity metrics using Academic Analytics and other sources, and
    • Coordinate with Foundation Relations on the selection of the nominee.
  • Collaboration with OSU’s Enterprise for Innovation, Research, and Knowledge (ERIK): Collaborate with ERIK’s team to enhance the reach and impact of research and innovation through faculty external awards.
  • Collaboration with Marketing and Communications: Collaborate with the marketing and communications team to promote faculty recognition and raise visibility.
  • Collaboration with OFA Faculty Development Initiatives: Collaborate on the development and implementation of faculty programming, that contribute to visibility and competitiveness for prestigious external awards.

15% Management and Reporting

  • Data Management and Reporting: Maintain data and reports on faculty award submissions and success rates. Use this information to inform institutional strategy and continuously improve the awards process.
  • Limited Submission Opportunity: Manage the schedule of posting LSOs in collaboration with Foundations Relations and communicate these across the academic network.

10% Coordination and Support of Award Office

  • Award Coordination: Work with Associate Vice Provost, Communication and Marketing, and Events group to help coordinate the award programming (internal and external) and faculty recognition across OSU.
