What are the responsibilities and job description for the Marketing and Communications Specialist position at The Ohio State University?
The Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center seeks to fill a full-time (at least 30 hours per week) temporary Marketing and Communications Specialist role to partner with staff and researchers to ensure success in current and future research projects, scholarship, education and outreach activities and the administrative foundation.
This role encompasses three primary aspects:
- Marketing: Responds to requests for and facilitates all aspects of public and educational tours of the Byrd Center for groups ranging between 2 – 50 individuals. Works with requestor to ensure targeted learning outcomes of the tours are achieved. Responsible for managing requests received for programs that focus on geosciences education, climate change education, environmental education, and research at the Byrd Center. Collaborates with partners throughout the Byrd Center to design and manage all aspects that result in successful public programs including talks, activities, workshops, and tabling events.
- Communications and Social Media: Assists in maintaining website and other social media platform data/ assistance with digital and printed graphics projects for posters per sponsor / publisher / conference requirements in alignment with scientific and technical documents.
- Administrative: Assists the team with administrative research tasks including proofing text for proposals, budgets, educational products, and advertising materials; organizing and managing research and other technical documents, forms, and files; preparing research reports for sponsors, scientific conferences, and publications.
Qualifications Required
- Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Attention to details ensuring accurate data and quality work products.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated dependability and ability to work collaboratively within a team.
- Ability to manage and meet project requirements and deadlines.
- Willingness to learn about the research proposal and funding processes at Ohio State
- Ability to read and interpret scientific and or technical documents.
Qualifications Desired
- Bachelor’s/Master’s – Environmental Sciences or other Earth Science related field
- 1-2 year’s relevant experience preferred.

The pay range for this job profile is $21.11-21.50 per hour. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on multiple factors including internal equity, unit’s available budget, and the candidate’s qualifications.
