What are the responsibilities and job description for the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor position at The Omaha Tribe of Nebraska?
SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the WIC Director and guidance of the Nutrition & Breastfeeding Coordinator, the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) will primarily focus on achieving the annual breastfeeding goals set forth by the ONWP. The BFPC will be responsible for hosting classes/community events, doing home/hospital visits, creating monthly bulletin boards, data entry, correspondence (postal mail, email, phone), and social media outreach. Must have successfully breastfed at least one child, be able to work well with the general public and maintain positive, professional communication at all times; strong customer service skills are critical. Meetings, training and conferences both remote and in-person, some involving travel, are required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and/or RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Maintains strict confidentiality in all aspects of the program in compliance with both ONWP policy & procedures and HIPPA laws.
- Initiates and maintains contact with all prenatal participants.
- Provides breastfeeding support and outreach to participants through prenatal/postpartum classes, community events, health fairs, and other health promotion projects as assigned.
- Documents all breastfeeding contacts appropriately in the NATIONS MIS.
- Performs home visits and/or hospital visits, as outlined in ONWP policy/procedure and under the guidance of the Nutrition & Breastfeeding Coordinator, for lactation education purposes.
- Corresponds with program participants through postal mail, email, text, social media, and/or phone calls; documents all correspondence appropriately in NATIONS MIS.
- Provides families with lactation education materials and makes referrals to other ONWP staff and/or the appropriate community resources.
- Responsible for daily social media outreach across all ONWP social media platforms.
- Responsible for planning and creating a bulletin board using designated breastfeeding topics each month.
- Creates flyers, social media messaging, and newsletters to promote ONWP breastfeeding classes, happenings, and events.
- Assists with entering data received into the NATIONS MIS in accordance with ONWP and USDA-FNS regulations.
- Will attend all remote/in-person meetings, trainings and conferences as assigned.
- Will perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- Will become proficient in the Clinic Module of the NATIONS MIS.
- Will become familiar with and follow established guidelines in accordance with federal USDA-FNS rules and regulations.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, and/or REGISTRATIONS:
- Must have valid driver's license and be insurable under Tribe insurance
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and/or ABILITIES:
- Must have successfully breastfed at least one child.
- Knowledge of basic breastfeeding practices and ability to provide general instruction.
- Demonstrate ability to interview participants and elicit breastfeeding-related medical/nutrition information from participants.
- Demonstrate ability to accurately record breastfeeding data, amend Care Plans and document breastfeeding services in NATIONS MIS.
- Must have excellent customer service skills and be able to work well with the Federal, Regional, State, and Local Representatives for the benefit of the program.
- Must be able to develop a firm understanding of and be able to work in accordance with the WIC Consolidated Federal Regulations (CFR), WIC Nutrition Services Standards and ONWP Policy & Procedure Manual.
- Must be computer proficient with a strong working knowledge of Word, Adobe, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint; and become familiar with Clinic and Nutrition modules in the NATIONS MIS (the computer system used by the ONWP).
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work well with all other ONWP staff members, the NATIONS cohort, Tribal programs, other WIC agencies, vendors, participants and the community at large.
- Must be a self-starter and be able to work independently when needed.
- Knowledge of the Privacy Act and ability to maintain strict confidentiality in all aspects of the program in compliance with both ONWP policy & procedures and HIPPA laws.
