About The Opportunity
The Controller is responsible for the day-to-day financial management and administration of ONE and its affiliate entities, including accounting, financial reporting, payables and receivables. The Controller will provide leadership and coordination of company financial reporting and budget management functions. They will ensure organization accounting policies and procedures are in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and will enforce internal control policies to safeguard organization assets. Compliance with nonprofit accounting rules, grant tracking and reporting are also included. The Controller is seen as a trusted thought leader who analyzes and synthetizes information for multiple audiences and implements best practices, all while keeping the cultural and operational needs of the organization in mind.
The Controller will directly supervise the full Finance team, which is comprised of a Senior Finance and Accounting Manager, Senior Global Payroll Manager, Finance and Operations Manager(s) in each market and a Budget and Finance Analyst. This role reports to the Chief Financial Officer and will be based in our Washington, DC office.
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL
Working with the CFO and other members of the finance team, the Controller will focus on the following priorities:
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Fluency in English required. Proficiency in other languages such as French and German is a plus.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL
Working with the CFO and other members of the finance team, the Controller will focus on the following priorities:
- Manage the general accounting and reporting systems to ensure ONE’s assets are safeguarded, and policies and procedures are GAAP and IRS compliant.
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable, ensuring accurate, timely entries and processing.
- Prepare, analyze and distribute timely financial statements and cash-flow forecasting reports.
- Establish and maintain effective, efficient department systems and procedures and recommend enhancements as required, including:
- Oversee and manage the productivity of day-to-day activities of the accounting and finance staff
- Manage the timeliness and accuracy of the general ledger for ONE Campaign and ONE Action, including creating and reviewing journal entries, performing account analysis, and enforcing the timely entry of A/P, A/R, and payroll data
- Monitor cash position and ensure there is adequate cash flow to meet organizational needs
- Assess accounting information systems and manage transition towards a paperless accounting environment
- Review Accounting Manager’s month-end financial package, including bank reconciliations, global office reconciliations and imports, and accrual and other adjusting journal entries.
- Review all financial statements and trial balances for accuracy
- Prepare monthly and annual financial reports and memos for the CFO, COO, and all other internal and external audiences or agencies
- Review and assist with distribution of monthly budget vs. actual reports; work with managers to monitor director- and program-level budgets
- Prepare monthly and annual financial reports for ONE affiliate entities
- Monitor cash-flow and prepare cash-flow forecasts
- Enforce and recommend systems of internal controls, including policies and procedures, to safeguard financial assets of the organization
- Oversee year-end audits, tax returns, DC annual report filings, and other report filings and business licenses. Ensure ONE’s compliance with nonprofit accounting rules
- Ensure ONE’s compliance with IRS rules for 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 organizations
- Work with the CFO to develop and monitor annual and grant proposal budgets
- Prepare for annual independent financial statement audits of ONE and affiliated entities
- Serve as primary contact with independent auditors; work with auditors to complete field work, to fulfill all PBC requests, etc.
- Assist CFO with preparation of annual Form 990, Form 990-T, and other required U.S. and non-U.S. filings
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance required; MBA/CPA preferred
- Strong knowledge of and ability to abide by U.S. GAAP and IRS regulations for 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) non-profit organizations
- At least 10 years financial and accounting experience with 5 years in a non-profit setting
- Minimum three years supervisory experience and ability to manage others
- Track record of successful experience in efficient, accurate and timely month-end closing and production of financial statements
- Experience managing financials for a global organization with offices outside the U.S.
- Expert with Intaact and QuickBooks online strongly preferred
- Detail-oriented, ability to complete multiple tasks accurately within critical deadlines
- Excellent organizational, problem solving and decision-making skills; ability to prioritize department's workload
- Familiarity with paperless accounting environments a plus
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Strict confidentiality and a proven ability to exercise good judgment are essential
