JOB POSITION: COOK
**MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS!!**
SUMMARY: Sets up all items in his/her station of the kitchen. Portions and prepares food prior to cooking (prep work). Maintains sufficient stock levels throughout the shift. Prepares food complying with all health regulations, quality standards and cooking procedures. Maintains a sanitary work station. Assists other cooks. Cleans assigned work station at end of shift.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Works with a sense of urgency
- Sets up all items in his/her station in the kitchen
- Maintains sufficient stock levels throughout the shift.
- Does “prep work” as needed. These duties include: cuts/dices meats and vegetables, slice/grates cheese, and prepares some sauces.
- Cooks food complying with all portion sizes, quality standards, and cooking procedures.
- Works in cooperation with the servers to ensure that each order is cooked as the customer requested.
- Assists other cooks with their duties.
- Works as a team with other cooks to ensure each check is properly timed – that the food comes out of the kitchen at the same time.
- Considers “reorder” checks a priority and will get the food out quickly.
- Follows all safe food handling practices regarding holding temperatures and times for meats, eggs, sauces, batters and other food.
- Follows all safety precautions to prevent injury or illness.
- Maintains a sanitary work station at the end of shift.
- Cleans assigned work station at end of shift.
- Performs other cleaning duties as assigned.
- May check in deliveries and put stock away.
- Readily accepts direction from management.
EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of three months to one year related experience and/or training is preferred. Working for OPH as a busser or dishwasher may qualify as related experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend guest checks, simple instructions, and memos. Ability to quickly transmit orders verbally to other cooks. Must be able to communicate, in English, with other employees about orders and other work related situations. (You are not required to be fluent in English).
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide simple problems. (A calculator may be used.) Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement such as tablespoons, cups, gallons, pounds, and ounces.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to deal repeatedly with standardized tasks or problems with several variables. Such as: cooking a large number of orders while also being able to handle any special requests or modifications. Must be able to multitask.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly(up to the entire shift) required to:
- Stand
- Walk
- Use hands to grasp or handle objects (pans, spatulas, and plates)
- Reach with hands and arms (to pick up or set down plates)
- Stoop or bend (to go into reach-in coolers or ovens)
- Talk and hear
- Taste and smell
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
- The ability to see and read a guest check at a distance of three feet is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Depending upon the station worked in the kitchen, the employee may regularly (up to the entire shift) be exposed to extreme heat from the ovens or grills, or may frequently be exposed to fumes from the meat grill. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally loud. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
