Job Title: Outdoor Education Instructor
Location: Trinity, Texas
Pay: $12/hour
Job Type: Full-Time/Seasonal - work days and hours will vary.
Duration: Generally, the spring season runs from mid February through mid May. This is a seasonal position, and exact dates vary from year to year..
Room and Board: Staff receive on-site housing during the semester and free meals when the program is running.
At the Outdoor Education Center at Camp Olympia in Trinity, Texas we offer a premier outdoor education program for schools from all over Houston and beyond. Our program provides an opportunity for students to explore and learn while being immersed in the natural world. We strive to give students experiential opportunities that stimulate intellectual, social, and emotional growth.
Job Summary:
We are seeking a passionate Outdoor Education Instructor to join our team! This internship offers hands-on experience in environmental education, outdoor leadership, and youth development. Interns will work alongside experienced outdoor educators and camp staff to design, implement, and facilitate outdoor programs that inspire youth to connect with nature, build leadership skills, and develop an appreciation for sustainability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead Outdoor Activities: Teach from a pre-approved academic and adventure curriculum including team building, reptiles, forest study, canoeing, archery, survival skills, horseback, and many more!
- Supervision: Support and supervise campers in a variety of outdoor settings, encouraging teamwork, personal growth, and problem-solving.
- Safety and Risk Management: Assist in assuring the safety and well-being of all campers, including implementing safety protocols when necessary.
- Camp Operations Support: Participate in daily camp operations, including meal times and nightly programming.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with camp leadership, fellow interns, and counselors to create a positive, inclusive, and supportive camp environment.
- Professional Development: Participate in ongoing training sessions and workshops to enhance knowledge and skills in outdoor education, leadership, and safety.
Qualifications:
To qualify for this job, applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years of age on or before the season start date.
- Have at least a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Have previous experience working with children or in an outdoor setting (summer camps, environmental education, outdoor adventure programs, etc.).
- Possess the following skills:
- The ability and desire to work with students in small and large group situations, a desire to live in community, creativity and flexibility.
- Strong communication and leadership.
- The ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Express an interest in learning new skills to teach a variety of classes.
- Commit to working the duration of the season with little to no conflict.
- Being promptly on time or early in preparation for classes.
- Separate themselves from technology during working hours, except when in use for work purposes.
- Successfully fulfill the physical aspects of this role with or without reasonable accommodation, including working long days in the outdoors, in the heat, cold, or rain; supervising groups of youth and facilitating a variety of activities that may require the staff member to lift, pull, walk, hike, climb, bend, sit, and/or stand.
- Provide a positive example in etiquette and behavior, while maintaining a professional attitude.
