The Packer Collegiate Institute is seeking a full-time Instrumental Music Teacher for the 2025 / 26 school year to work with students in grades 4 through 12. The ideal candidate will be passionate about music education and demonstrate expertise in teaching a wide range of musical styles, including but not limited to traditional concert and wind ensemble techniques, jazz, modern band, and wind and brass choir. A specialization in brass instruments is preferred to complement the existing team of woodwind and string faculty.

This role involves guiding students in the development of essential musical skills, fostering a high standard of tone production, music literacy, creativity, collaboration, and an understanding of fundamental musical elements. A key focus of the position is to inspire students to take their instrumental studies seriously and cultivate a disciplined approach to their musical growth, aligning with Packer's commitment to the Arts as a vital part of the student experience.

Daily attendance is 8 : 00-3 : 30. Classes are scheduled during regular school hours from 8 : 10am - 2 : 30pm. Performances typically take place outside of these hours. Upper School music teachers direct an extended curricular rehearsal on Thursdays from 3 : 20pm - 4 : 00pm. Additionally, faculty are required to attend weekly Tuesday divisional, departmental, or all-school meetings from 3 : 30pm - 5 : 00pm. The option to teach private lessons through the school's auxiliary program after school is available. The Instrumental Music Teacher will report to the Head of Arts.

Responsibilities :

  • Lead Instrumental classes from 4th - 12th grade
  • Plan and conduct rehearsals, fostering instrumental and musical development including, but not limited to, instrumental skills and techniques, music literacy, and fundamentals of musicianship
  • Select, arrange, and prepare repertoire for school concerts, assemblies, and special events.
  • Provide a high standard of excellence
  • Facilitate and organize performances during and outside of the school day
  • Support the academic / social / emotional development of all students
  • Use effective classroom management strategies to promote a productive learning atmosphere
  • Collaborate well with colleagues to plan, create, and implement curriculum
  • Communicate effectively with families with regard to all aspects of classroom life and child development
  • Be responsible for ongoing student assessment
  • Perform necessary routine tasks and daily maintenance of the classroom, including stewarding our collection of musical instruments and equipment
  • Serve as an active community member that is highly collaborative and partners well with teachers, families, administration, and students
  • Contribute positively to Divisional, All School, and Departmental meetings
  • Serve as an advisor in the Middle or Upper School, or be assigned a duty

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music performance and / or Music Education, or related field preferred
  • Brass specialist preferred
  • Experience teaching elementary and middle school-aged students in a school setting
  • Extensive knowledge of band and wind ensemble repertoire
  • Ability to teach all band instruments
  • Exhibit professionalism and strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills with families, students, and colleagues
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate positively with co-workers
  • Ability to create a positive learning environment that challenges and supports student musicians and motivates them
