The Park School is a Pre-K to Grade 8 independent school in Brookline, MA, dedicated to excellence in education. The Upper Division Librarian is a member of the school’s Upper Division and reports to the Upper Division Head. This full-time, 10-month position comes with the responsibility of working with faculty and staff to teach students in the upper division grades 5-8  in support of the school’s mission and curricular goals. 

 

Responsibilities

 
  • Teach research skills required to locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and use information from a variety of sources
  • Oversee the management of the School’s library collection, including new purchases, cataloging, weeding, inventory, etc. 
  • Empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users and producers of information
  • Actively engage the community in multiple perspectives by providing access to and recommendations for a diverse set of resources
  • Work with faculty and students to evaluate, promote, and use existing and emerging resources and technology
  • Create community learning experiences, including reading initiatives and celebrations, author visits, hands-on learning activities, and projects integrating digital resources
  • Participate in faculty and committee work, school duties, and extra activities such as clubs and assemblies
  • Transport and shelve books in a multi-level library space
  • Establish and implement expectations for student safety and conduct, and procedures and routines consistent with School policies
  • Participate in and contribute to an adult learning community by engaging in meetings, discussions, committees, task forces, and professional development.
  • Complete administrative tasks and coverage duties as assigned (student supervision, attendance, reporting, documenting curriculum, etc.)
  • Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice and performance
  • Ensure that respect for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, social-emotional learning, and academic excellence are emphasized as core values of the School

Qualifications

Qualifications/Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field required.  Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or Library Science preferred.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of library teaching experience at the middle school level is preferred. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with students, colleagues, and other adults. 
  • Strong communication skills, including experience in writing student comments and other school-related documents.
  • ​​High integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in teaching and learning & experience in working in a culturally diverse community. 
  • Demonstrated interest in ongoing professional development and innovative practices that support student growth.
  • Ability to think independently and collaborate in a team environment.
  • Skill in differentiating instruction
  • Maintain focus and adaptability in an energetic and, at times, loud environment.
  • Effectively interpret, navigate, mediate, and resolve conflict with students and families in a timely manner. 
  • The ability to hold meetings in person and via supported video conference tools (i.e. Zoom or Google Meet).
  • Proficient or the ability to learn Google tools and other applications as adopted by the School, such as Veracross, Ruvna, Atlas etc. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • The ability to sit and stand uninterrupted for 30-minute periods of time.
  • The ability to regularly walk on and travel across variable surfaces (e.g. level flooring, stairs, turf, gravel, asphalt, etc.).
  • The ability to lead, supervise and accompany students to all areas of the school campus (including all indoor and outdoor areas), including during day-to-day responsibilities and in case of emergency. 
  • The ability to consistently operate a computer. Proficient or the ability to quickly learn  Google tools and other school software. 
  • The ability to regularly stand, sit, crouch, and kneel down in order to support students. 
  • The ability to work outdoors, year-round, in variable weather conditions.
  • The ability to lift and hold 15 lbs overhead. 
  • The ability to occasionally transport (e.g., move or drag) 25 lbs. 
  • The ability to maintain focus and composure in an energetic and, at times, loud environment.

  • The compensation range for this role is based on a faculty scale ranging from $65,140 to $134,680  annually. Actual salaries will vary depending on multiple factors, including but not limited to degrees received, years of teaching experience,  and other considerations permitted by law. The comprehensive compensation details, inclusive of any additional benefits, will be communicated upon finalization of the employment offer.

Salary : $65,140 - $134,680
