The Park School is a Pre-K to Grade 8 independent school in Brookline, MA dedicated to excellence in education. The upper division permanent substitute is a member of the school’s Upper Division and reports to the Upper Division Head. This full-time, 10-month position comes with the responsibility of working with faculty to cover upper-division classes in support of the school’s mission and curricular goals. 

 

Responsibilities

 
  • Available and on campus during school hours (7:45 am - 4:45 pm) to fulfill any predetermined or as-needed coverage requirements
  • Responsible for morning and end-of-school-day bus monitoring duty
  • Collaborate with teachers to fully understand, plan, and implement lesson plans while the teacher is absent, including preparation outside of classroom time
  • Effective and respectful class management skills, an understanding of the social/emotional development of children, team-oriented, and possess an exceptional work ethic
  • Helping with recess, lunch, and other duties in the Division when available
  • Opportunities to participate in other areas, such as athletic coaching or working with our After School Program, are available
  • Establish and implement expectations for student safety, conduct, procedures, and routines consistent with Park School policies. 
  • Participate in the school community, including faculty and committee work, weekly school duties,  and attendance at mandatory meetings is required.
  • Update documentation of current curriculum, instruction, and assessment
  • Maintain records of individual student progress and achievement
  • Assess student performance and engagement, including academics, behavior, and social-emotional needs, while communicating directly with students, colleagues, and families both formally and informally when necessary
  • Meaningfully integrate technologies into class lessons for student learning and growth 
  • Complete administrative tasks and coverage duties as assigned (student supervision, attendance, reporting, documenting curriculum, event/activity coverage, etc.)
  • Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice and performance
  • Collaborate with the office of  Diversity, Equity,  Inclusion & Belonging to keep multiculturalism and diversity as a priority of curricular work and curriculum development
  • Ensure that respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion, social-emotional learning, and academic excellence are emphasized as core values of The Park School. 
 

Qualifications

Qualifications/Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.  Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of teaching experience at the middle school level is preferred. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with students, colleagues, and other adults. 
  • Strong communication skills, including experience in writing student comments and other school-related documents.
  • ​​High integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in teaching and learning & experience in working in a culturally diverse community. 
  • Demonstrated interest in ongoing professional development and innovative practices that support student growth.
  • Ability to think independently and collaborate in a team environment.
  • Skill in differentiating instruction
  • Maintain focus and adaptability in an energetic and, at times, loud environment.
  • Effectively interpret, navigate, mediate, and resolve conflict with students and families in a timely manner. 
  • The ability to hold meetings in person and via supported video conference tools (i.e. Zoom or Google Meet).
  • Proficient or the ability to learn Google tools and other applications as adopted by the School, such as Veracross, SchoolPass, Atlas etc. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • The ability to sit and stand uninterrupted for 30 minute periods of time.
  • The ability to regularly walk on and travel across variable surfaces (e.g. level flooring, stairs, turf, gravel, asphalt, etc.).
  • The ability to lead, supervise and accompany students to all areas of the school campus (including all indoor and outdoor areas), including during day-to-day responsibilities and in case of emergency. 
  • The ability to consistently operate a computer. Proficient or the ability to quickly learn  Google tools and other school software. 
  • The ability to regularly stand, sit, crouch, and kneel down in order to support students. 
  • The ability to work outdoors, year-round, in variable weather conditions.
  • The ability to lift and hold 15 lbs overhead. 
  • The ability to occasionally transport (e.g., move or drag) 25 lbs. 
  • The ability to maintain focus and composure in an energetic and, at times, loud environment.
