JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State's Agricultural Safety and Health (ASH) Program in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) seeks an education program specialist at the intermediate or advanced professional level. As part of a team, this person's primary responsibility will be to plan, organize, and deliver agricultural safety and rescue training programs for the following audiences: farmers, farm workers, and their families, professional organizations, first responders, agricultural educators (secondary and college level), state agencies, and extension teams. Responsibilities will include maintaining existing programs and developing new ones to respond to identified needs and priorities.

Role:

The Agricultural Safety and Health Education Program Specialist primary duties are connected to:

  • Training program administration and logistics (~35% effort). This includes: a) developing and maintaining collaborations with stakeholders to create, customize, and deploy training programs, b) planning the logistical and administrative aspects of training, and c) collaborating with the ASH program leader to develop revenue enhancement strategies.

  • Training program development and training (~50% effort). This includes: a) regularly reviewing and revising training material content and delivery methods, b) developing new trainings based on gaps identified and requests from agricultural communities and stakeholders, c) delivering trainings using a variety of delivery methods on your own and with co-instructors, d) collaborating with the ASH team and faculty members in the ABE department to develop new safety demonstrations and new engineering safety solutions, and e) contribute to broader extension activities of the ASH program.

  • Evaluation and reporting (~15% effort). This includes: a) collaborating with the ASH program leader to develop and implement evaluation of training programs, b) participating in needs assessments to identify opportunities for new training programs and adjustments to be made to existing programs, c) contributing to the writing of annual and grant reports, and d) contribute to the writing of applied research and extension articles to share about ASH program innovations and lessons learned.

Education and Experience:

This person will be hired at either the intermediate or advanced professional level. The intermediate professional level requires a bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, extension education, agricultural sciences, or engineering plus 1 or more years of position-relevant experience. The advanced professional level requires a bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, extension education, agricultural sciences, or engineering plus 3 or more years of position-relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. In addition, a mix of the following are required or preferred:

  • Emergency Medical Services (current, expired, or willing to obtain in the first year of employment).

  • Hands-on experience with fire/rescue operations.

  • OSHA-30 current certification or willingness to obtain it within the first six months of employment.

  • Hands-on experience with agricultural machinery and equipment, farm animals, and production agricultural enterprises.

  • Experience, or willingness to learn, driving pickup trucks and trailers, ATV/UTVs, skid loader.

  • Experience with project management including goal development and implementation, and resource management.

Additional Information:

This is an in-person position based on the University Park campus with some travel in Pennsylvania and occasional travel in neighboring states. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.The position includes working on some evenings and weekends. This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with good possibility of refunding.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$51,000.00 - $81,500.00
