JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) in the College of Health and Human Development (CHHD) at Penn State University seeks applicants for a term, non-tenure track open-rank Teaching Professor position (48-week appointment). We seek candidates who are strong generalists, with a breadth of expertise enabling them to teach across our HDFS undergraduate curriculum (including, but not limited to, developmental foundations courses, applied skills courses, and advanced topics courses).

The ideal candidate will bring knowledge, professionalism, and innovation to (and beyond) the classroom and be enthusiastic to work as part of a collaborative team focused on infusing engaged learning and career-development opportunities across our HDFS undergraduate offerings (curricular and co-curricular).

Candidates should have superior writing skills, with experience in program/curriculum development strongly preferred. Candidates should be comfortable, competent, and experienced working with students, but also with faculty and staff collaborators. Ideally, applicants will have experience working with both traditional and non-traditional students with diverse backgrounds and career goals, as well as experience instructing in in-person/residential formats as well as online.Specific competencies critical to success include excellent interpersonal and professional verbal and written communication skills; strong organizational skills; a team-oriented, collaborative approach to work; ability to build strong professional relationships with students and colleagues; and demonstrated expertise relevant to supporting undergraduate student career and professional skill development.

Primary appointment is within the HDFS department at Penn State's University Park campus, however, responsibilities likely to include instruction and curriculum development for HDFS online offerings through Penn State's World Campus. Within HDFS, the typical instructional load is 3-4 courses/sections per semester (in Fall / Spring) and 2 courses/sections in Summer (12 week) semesters.

The semester load, however, is always determined in balance with other assignments related to strategic efforts to enhance and maintain strong HDFS undergraduate programming (e.g., the development of new courses, and designing new approaches to existing courses). All HDFS faculty appointments also include regular service to the department (e.g. serving on committees).

The position requires a doctoral degree in Human Development and Family Studies, Psychology, or a related field (e.g., Education, Social Work).

Penn State is committed to and accountable for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of its forms. We embrace individual uniqueness, foster a culture of inclusive excellence that supports both broad and specific diversity initiatives, leverage the educational and institutional benefits of diversity, and engage all individuals to help them thrive. We value inclusive excellence as a core strength and an essential element of our public service mission.

Our campuses are located on the original homelands of the Erie, Haudenosaunee (Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk, and Tuscarora), Lenape (Delaware Nation, Delaware Tribe, Stockbridge-Munsee), Monongahela, Shawnee (Absentee, Eastern, and Oklahoma), Susquehannock, and Wahzhazhe (Osage) Nations. As a land grant institution, we acknowledge and honor the traditional caretakers of these lands and strive to understand and model their responsible stewardship. We also acknowledge the longer history of these lands and our place in that history.

This is a term faculty appointment that is funded for one year from the date of hire, with an excellent possibility of re-funding. When applying, please upload a cover letter, a CV, a brief statement of teaching philosophy/interest, and a list of contact information for three professional references. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. For questions, please contact Bo Cleveland, Ph.D. (hhc10@psu.edu).
