JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Department of Geosciences at The Pennsylvania State University, in University Park, PA, invites applications for a tenure-line Assistant Professor position at the intersection of volcanic outgassing, environmental carbon and mercury cycling, and climate. This position is a co-hire between the Department of Geosciences and the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI), fostering interdisciplinary research within the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS).
Responsibilities
We seek a colleague who will:
* Develop a vigorous, externally funded research program in volcanic outgassing, environmental carbon and mercury cycling, and their climate impacts.
* Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in environmental geochemistry and related topics.
* Provide mentorship and research training to graduate students.
* Strengthen collaborations between the Department of Geosciences and EESI.
* Contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts within the department and university community.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Science or a closely related field with expertise in volcanology and geochemistry at the time of appointment. They will have a strong record of research productivity and potential for external funding, experience in teaching and mentoring students, and a demonstrated record of building a nationally recognized research group in the fields of volcanic outgassing, element cycling, and paleoclimatology with a focus on large mafic eruptions. A successful candidate will show potential to build a research program that strengthens connections between the Geosciences department and EESI.
