JOB SUMMARY:
Individuals working as Athletic Program Coordinators in the Merit System are responsible for overseeing the administration of sports and recreational programs for city-wide athletic events and activities. Such individuals coordinate the use of equipment for city sponsored events, private sports organizations, and club events. They oversee the maintenance of city athletic facilities, direct subordinates in their job duties, and monitor the budget. Employees in this job class also maintain and submit reports to ensure recreational programs are equipped to meet the needs of its participants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for employment in this position, a candidate must possess at least one of the following:
Option A
- Driver's license.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Health and Recreation, Leisure Services, or a related recreation degree.
- Experience as a lead worker assisting to train, schedule and plan activities for fellow employees, volunteers, or other support staff.
- Experience developing and monitoring an operational budget for a department and/or program.
Option B
- Driver's license.
- Paid experience working at an administrative level developing, organizing and administering organized league programs involving various athletic sports (e.g., softball, baseball, soccer, tennis, basketball, etc.) to include facility operations, planning and monitoring programs.
- Experience working as a lead worker assisting to train, schedule and plan activities for fellow employees, volunteers, or other support staff.
- Experience developing and monitoring an operational budget for a department and/or program.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Qualifications (PQs) are examples of experience and education considered to be highly desirable by hiring agencies. Please select all PQ examples listed below that represent your current experience and/or education.
- CPR, First Aid, and AED Certifications.
- CPO (Certified Pool Operator) or AFO (Aquatic Facility Operator) Certification.
- Experience maintaining pools (Homewood specific).
JOB DUTIES
Typical job duties include, but are not necessarily limited to:
- Organizes and oversees the administration of sports and recreational programs for city wide athletic events and activities including softball, basketball, tennis, soccer and other sports.
- Coordinates and oversees the use and maintenance of city athletic facilities and equipment (i.e. fields, gymnasiums, swimming pools, etc.) for city sponsored and/or private sports organization and club events.
- Performs administrative duties such as maintaining records and submitting reports to ensure recreation programs are equipped to meet the needs of participants.
- Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
- Monitors participant compliance with all established rules, regulations, policies, and/or contractual obligations related to city athletic events, programs and/or facilities.
- Acts as liaison for the city recreation department to internal and external individuals/organizations to provide assistance with scheduled activities.
- Develops policies and procedures for recreation activities, events, programs, etc. in order to establish guidelines.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time. At times, job may require light to moderate physical exertion, including lifting, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or twisting. Job may also involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted both indoors in an office setting as well as regular field visits to outdoor worksites. Incumbents may be required to work nights and/or weekends. Job may include exposure to potentially hazardous working conditions (e.g., moving vehicles, biological and/or chemical hazards, etc.). Job may also require exposure to inclement weather when working outdoors (e.g., extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, etc.).
