JOB SUMMARY:
Brush and Trash Supervisors in the Merit System perform work that involves coordinating and overseeing the activities of multiple brush crews or other work crews engaged in the collection of brush and trash or clean-up activities within an assigned area. Employees in this class drive a pick-up truck on an established route to check on the progress of brush crews at various worksites throughout the area. Employees receive assignments from a Public Works Supervisor or other supervisors who define objectives, priorities, and deadlines, and assist the employee with unusual tasks. Work is reviewed for adherence to policies and procedures through observation and performance evaluations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
- Class B commercial driver's license.
- Experience using maps, GPS, and/or navigation instructions.
- Experience operating trucks and equipment that require a class B commercial driver's license (e.g., dump trucks, limb loaders, refuse trucks).
- Experience assigning and reviewing work.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

- Birmingham $20.46 - $31.73 USD Hourly
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
- Coordinates daily activities of brush and trash crews by assigning routes to be covered, resolving staffing issues, and ensuring that necessary supplies are available in order to provide timely and efficient pickup of brush and trash/refuse.
- Inspects the work of brush and trash crews to ensure that trash or brush is collected according to schedule, complaints are resolved, and safety and health issues are addressed.
- Performs general supervisory duties such as investigating complaints and accidents, addressing disciplinary issues, conducting staff meetings, ordering/storing supplies, and assisting Public Works Supervisors.
- Performs administrative duties such as documenting incidents and writing reports to ensure proper documentation is on file, record keeping is up to date, and daily work activities are completed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is primarily performed at outdoor worksites such as residential neighborhoods, landfills, etc.
- Work involves operating heavy equipment such as trucks, as well as a variety of hand tools.
- Job may require exposure to potentially hazardous work conditions (e.g., working in and around traffic, in and around landfills, working in and around heavy equipment).
- Job may also require exposure to inclement weather when working outdoors (e.g., extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind), as well as working around foul odors and potentially harmful waste.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Work requires driving a vehicle to various work sites daily. Work may also require occasional walking, bending, lifting, and physical dexterity when assisting or training personnel in brush and trash collection.
