JOB SUMMARY:
The City of Birmingham is actively seeking qualified a Chief Electrical Inspectors to direct and participate in the inspection of all electrical installations in the City of Birmingham. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with related codes and ordinances, contacting appropriate parties regarding violations found during inspections, explaining code requirements, and issuing stop work notices for work that is unauthorized, substandard or in violation of applicable codes. The Chief Electrical Inspector oversees the production and quality of work performed by subordinate employees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
- Driver's license.
- Master Electrician Certification from the State of Alabama, Jefferson County, or the City of Birmingham.
- State of Alabama Electrical Contractor license.
- Experience inspecting the work of other electricians.
- Experience using and interpreting the National Electrical Code (NEC) for inspectors, contractors, and/or homeowners.
- Experience interpreting and comprehending engineering and architectural plans.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Merit System agencies. These qualifications may be considered by a hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.
- International Code Council Electrical Inspector Certification.
- Experience inspecting industrial, commercial, residential and healthcare facilities.
- Experience enforcing electrical codes.

- Birmingham $62,857 - $97,531
JOB DUTIES:
Typical job duties include, but are not necessarily limited to:
- Enforces codes and ordinances by comparing potential violations to applicable codes and ordinances to ensure compliance and safety.
- Researches and reviews codes, ordinances, notices, and permitting by reading code books and amendments, and researching new materials to ensure knowledge is current or to provide accurate information to others.
- Conducts electrical inspections by comparing electrical constructions and installations to plan requirements to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Conducts general inspection activities for contractors by checking for valid permits, ensuring plans comply to relevant codes, and issuance of Certificates of Occupancy in accordance with professional inspections procedures so construction projects are compliant with codes.
- Conducts inspections related to life safety, handicap accessibility, and natural disasters by following professional inspections protocols and guidelines to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Reviews plans by comparing details of construction plans to applicable codes and ordinances to ensure compliance.
- Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines to upgrade procedures and improve work performance.
- Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted both indoors in an office setting, as well during occasional field visits. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, digital camera, phone, copier, etc.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or running. Work may involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
