The New York Philharmonic seeks an experienced human resources leader as Vice President (VP), People & Culture. The VP, People & Culture provides executive-level leadership and communication of all aspects of the New York Philharmonic's human resource functions. The VP, People & Culture will report to the President & CEO, serve as a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), and work with the organization's leadership to implement policies and practices, and help develop and maintain a positive and engaged organizational culture. The VP will set organizational policies and best practices, align with the NY 's Phil's Vision and Values, implement long-term strategic talent management and retention goals, and implement best practices and technology as appropriate.
The New York Philharmonic connects with millions of music lovers each season through live concerts in New York and around the world, as well as broadcasts, recordings, and education programs. After returning to a transformed David Geffen Hall in 2022, the Orchestra is acting on a renewed commitment to building on a legacy of more than 180 years, serving as a platform for today’s greatest musical artists and connecting with our communities. Gustavo Dudamel will become the Philharmonic’s Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Music and Artistic Director in the 2026–27 season.
Responsibilities :
- Oversee strategic planning and tactical execution of human resource activities.
- Serve as a key member of the ELT, helping to develop and maintain a healthy, optimal organizational culture based on values and ethics.
- Establish credibility throughout the organization as an effective listener and problem solver with both administrative staff, technical crew, and musicians.
- Provide counsel to ELT and others on personnel and human resources best practices to ensure effective team dynamics and high-functioning departments.
- Collaborate with executive leadership to identify ways to support the New York Phil's Vision and Values through recruitment, talent and performance management, succession planning, employee relations and training.
- Ensure operational excellence in critical areas including recruiting, performance management, labor relations, benefits administration, reporting, compensation, and professional development.
- Manage and oversee administration of health, dental, vision, disability, workers compensation, defined pension and 403(b) plans, in collaboration and consultation with the Chief Financial Officer.
- Partner with New York Phil musicians and staff leadership to ensure that the Phil is providing effective and customized human resources support to the organization.
- Routinely review the effectiveness of the workplace environment and the organization’s policies, practices and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations regarding employment, benefits, insurance, and safety.
- Support and / or serve on the collective bargaining agreement negotiation team.
- Manage and oversee the budget for the human resources department.
- Commitment to contributing to an inclusive working environment.
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
