The Transportation Coordinator will be responsible for establishing and leading a comprehensive transportation department, optimizing logistics for Independent Garden Centers, Home Depot, and small grocery chains. This role involves creating trucking lanes across the country, ensuring efficient and cost-effective transportation solutions.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
Build Transportation Infrastructure: Develop a scalable transportation department to meet the company’s growing logistics needs.
Establish Nationwide Trucking Lanes: Strategically design and implement trucking routes that optimize delivery performance across diverse customer bases.
Enhance Supply Chain Efficiency: Streamline transportation processes to minimize costs and maximize speed and reliability.
Support Business Growth: Drive revenue growth by implementing innovative transportation strategies tailored to customer requirements.
Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal transportation regulations.

Essential Job Functions
Department Creation & Leadership:
- Develop and oversee the establishment of a transportation department, including hiring, training, and mentoring a high-performing logistics team.
- Create policies, procedures, and best practices for department operations.
- Design and implement nationwide trucking lanes tailored to delivery requirements for garden centers, Home Depot, and grocery chains.
- Analyze and optimize routes to achieve cost savings, reduce transit times, and improve service reliability.
- Establish partnerships with carriers and logistics providers to build capacity and secure competitive pricing.
- Coordinate with sales, production, and inventory teams to ensure seamless logistics operations.
- Oversee shipping and receiving processes, ensuring timely updates and adherence to quality standards.
- Leverage technology to monitor fleet performance, delivery status, and overall operational efficiency.
- Foster strong relationships with key customers by providing proactive updates, addressing concerns, and delivering reliable service.
- Develop tailored transportation solutions to meet specific customer requirements.
- Monitor and control transportation costs through effective carrier negotiations and resource allocation.
- Implement data-driven decision-making processes to identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Ensure strict adherence to transportation regulations, including safety standards, environmental policies, and industry best practices.
- Develop contingency plans for disruptions, including weather events, carrier delays, and supply chain interruptions.
- Leverage analytics to identify trends, improve processes, and drive operational excellence.
- Evaluate and adopt emerging technologies to enhance the efficiency and visibility of transportation operations.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Proven experience in logistics, supply chain management, or transportation operations, with a focus on building systems from the ground up.
- Strong leadership and team-building skills.
- Expertise in route optimization, freight negotiations, and carrier management.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements, including DOT and FMCSA standards.
- Proficiency in transportation management systems (TMS) and data analytics tools.
- Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
