Job Description : Part-Time Cook
Job Summary :
The Part-Time Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking meals for residents in the nursing home, following dietary guidelines and ensuring that all meals are nutritious, safe, and appealing. This role includes meal prep, cooking, and maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen area. The Cook will work closely with the Food Service Manager and dietary staff to ensure that resident needs are met, including special dietary requirements.
Key Responsibilities :
Meal Preparation and Cooking : Prepare and cook meals according to the menu, dietary guidelines, and special resident needs. Ensure that meals are prepared in a safe and hygienic manner, following proper food handling and cooking techniques.
Special Dietary Requirements : Accommodate residents’ special dietary needs (e.g., diabetic, low-sodium, or gluten-free diets), and work with the Food Service Manager to ensure all food requirements are met.
Portion Control : Follow portion sizes as outlined in the menu and food production sheets. Ensure that all meals are served at the appropriate temperature and are visually appealing.
Food Safety and Sanitation : Maintain cleanliness and organization in the kitchen area, ensuring all food preparation and cooking equipment is sanitized. Follow food safety guidelines, including proper storage and handling of food items, and monitor food temperatures to prevent foodborne illness.
Inventory and Stocking : Help with the inventory of food items, ensuring that kitchen supplies are properly stored and that items are rotated to maintain freshness. Assist with ordering and restocking food supplies as needed.
Assist with Meal Service : Occasionally assist in plating or serving meals to residents, ensuring that all residents receive their meals in a timely and professional manner.
Clean Kitchen Equipment and Work Areas : Wash dishes, utensils, and cookware used during meal preparation. Ensure the kitchen and work areas are cleaned and maintained according to safety and sanitation guidelines.
Support Special Events : Assist with preparing meals for special events or themed meals, such as holiday meals or celebrations for residents.
Communicate with Team : Work closely with the Food Service Manager and other kitchen staff to ensure smooth meal service and address any issues or concerns promptly.
Qualifications :
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience in a cooking or food service role, preferably in a healthcare or institutional setting, is preferred.
- Knowledge of food preparation techniques and nutrition, especially in the context of senior care and special dietary needs.
- Ability to follow recipes, portion control guidelines, and safety standards.
- Basic understanding of food safety, including proper food storage and handling.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members and other staff.
- Compassionate and respectful approach when working with elderly residents.
