About the Role
Under the direction of the Chief Maintenance Supervisor: Supervise, implement, schedule, and direct work for various maintenance staff, including General Maintainers and Paving Mechanics.
Responsibilities
- Directly oversee the Paving and General Shop to perform planned maintenance, corrective actions, inspections, and emergency repairs, including concrete/asphalt pavement, catch basins, curbs, sidewalks, and steps.
- Coordinate permanent repairs of pavement failures with the Construction Management Division and their contractors.
- Manage contracts for paving and patching services, landscape maintenance, supply and delivery of asphalt, concrete, roadway shoulder stone and related materials.
- Ensure optimal use of personnel, materials, equipment, and resources to meet maintenance standards, including scheduling and cost tracking via MAXIMO.
- Prioritize and plan work, assign tasks, train and orient new employees, analyze staffing/material needs, and specify equipment and methods.
- Conduct inspections, instruct on safety practices, oversee QAD activities, and supervise snow removal/emergency operations.
- May be called to supervise other maintenance units and provide expertise on various maintenance issues as part of the NJMT Maintenance supervisor team.
- Preparing written comments for all stages of design/construction submittals and recommending best alternatives to the GMS, CMS, and Physical Plant Manager.
- Achieving compliance with safety and security protocols and regulatory codes and standards in compliance with Quality Assurance Division and Operation Services Department

Additional Information
- This position is located at 260 Kellogg Street, Port Newark, New Jersey Marine Terminals, and the regular work schedule is Monday to Friday on B Tour (6:30 AM to 2:30 PM).
- Selected candidate may need to provide coverage on the B Tour (6:30AM to 2:30PM - Monday through Friday) for vacation, sick absences and IODs.
- On certain assignments, the individual may be required to work at extreme heights, exposed to adverse weather conditions and irregular hours to cover emergencies and inclement weather conditions.
- Must be able to respond to declared emergencies, including snow conditions and work on an overtime basis as a regular function of the job.
- Selected candidate will be required to undergo a thorough Federal Security Background investigation and obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) to work in a maritime environment as required by Department of Homeland Security.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:
- C-Level and non-represented employees must be qualified on the Entry-Level Assessment (ESA).
- Must have three (3) years maintenance experience at or above the journey-level or equivalent.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
Desired Qualifications
- Ideal candidates will present the following profile:
- Possess a thorough knowledge of maintenance equipment, procedures, and the work methods of various trades; understand safety practices and related national codes; and be able to read and plan work from drawings.
- Working knowledge of IUOE and BTU contracts, absence control policies, and the ability to interpret union agreements.
- Experience in reading and interpreting contract documents, drawings, technical manuals, reviewing engineering plans.
- Leadership experience with ability to effectively supervise a crew of skilled and semi-skilled employees to ensure that work orders are completed on time.
- Strong time management skills with experience in reviewing engineering plans promptly.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, Maximo, and document/drawing reader and sharing programs.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal, and collaborative skills, with experience working with PA staff, external agencies, contractors, and vendors.
- Proven negotiation and conflict resolution abilities.
- Experience managing and coordinating multiple projects simultaneously, including construction, maintenance, and SEMAC.
