About the Role

The Office of the Chief Health & Safety Officer (CHSO) plays a vital role in furthering the mission of the Port Authority by ensuring the workplace meets all occupational health and safety legal expectations and actively supports the highest quality occupational health and safety programs to ensure the safe movement of the Port Authority’s customers, partners, employees, and stakeholders every day

Under the direction of the Deputy General Manager, Agency Safety Management, the Manager of Operations Safet y will be responsible for developing, evaluating and administering Operational Safety programs and services for the Agency; oversee Agency compliance with federal, state and local operational safety standards and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and manage professional and technical staff performing complex evaluations implementing Safety Programs, Fire Safety, Public and conducting incident and accident investigations.
  • Participate at internal and external meetings and on internal committees to represent the interests of the Agency Safety Management.
  • Oversee the daily administration of the Operational Safety Units and administer the employee performance management program.
  • Assist with the development of divisional metrics, performance reporting, project management and continuous business improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor and support the advancement of divisional strategic goals aligned with the agency’s strategic priorities.
  • Respond to emergencies, incidents, and crises across all facilities on a 24/7/365 basis, as necessary.
  • Provide timely and expert guidance on matters related to operational safety.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in science , Public and Occupational Health, Operational Safety, Industrial Hygiene or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum 7 years practical experience in the Public and Occupational Health and/or Operational Safety field with at least 3 years of supervisory/management experience
  • Demonstrated experience with NYC Fire Code, NYC Department of Building Codes, and Uniform Fire Code.
  • Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with OSHA, NY & NJ Occupational Health, Public Health and Safety codes and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently and to successfully manage projects from inception to completion
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook365
  • Ability to work with staff at all levels
  • C ertifications: CHST and or TSSP
  • Credential such as a Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional or Registered Environmental Health Specialist or equivalent though not required are considered a plus.
